Currently… It’s Feeling Like Summer!

Currently… A post on “things of the moment” for me (#13). [Inspired by Marcia and other bloggers.]

Well. This is Miami, but summer has arrived in Chicago, too!
Well. This is Miami, but summer has arrived in Chicago, too!

State of things: Summer is hitting Chicago hard with temps in the 90s and high humidity but today is expected to be better. I am actually in Miami with my college girlfriends. When we moved our trip to June, we forgot about hurricane season. Oops. The great news is that despite storms on arrival, we had a great sunny day yesterday and today is expected to be nice, too. Let’s hope that the travel gods are on our side, too. Fingers crossed. We are enjoying spa and fitness at the Carillon Hotel (formerly Canyon Ranch Miami) and, of course, time catching up with each other. Amazing to think that we’ve been friends for over 25 years. Where does the time go?

books currently 13

Books:I’m binge reading the Nicci French series about a troubled Psychotherapist who gets involved with solving crimes set in London. I am on #4 out of 5. I have my book club’s next pick queued up – Devil in the Grove by Gilbert King. It won a Pulitzer in 2013. Nicci French did not, but I am enjoying it nonetheless! I also started reading JoJo Moyes’ The Girl You Left Behind. Another winner. Have you read anything good lately?

Norman Lear is amazing!

Movies: We saw the Norman Lear documentary Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You. He was there with the filmmakers to answer questions (and actually sat in our row). The movie was really well done and he is AMAZING. He is in his 90s and is still working on new projects. He embraces technology and its impact on television. He says now is the golden age. So cool! See this movie it it comes to you! Have you seen anything good lately?

TV: The Husband and I watched both seasons of The Affair and Transparent and are now watching the last season of Downton Abbey. Such good stuff! We loved the multiple perspectives in The Affair and great acting in Transparent (but “Oy!” thank goodness that our family is not life the Pfeffermans! So much DRAMA and narcissism.) Anything else good for us to put on our list?

Website/Podcast: I am enjoying Start Up’s new season profiling one company per episode and I loved the 4 part, Serial-like episodes of Reply All called “On The Inside.” Sruthi Pinnamaneni told the story of Paul Modrowski a prisoner in Illinois who was linked to a 1992 murder who wrote a blog via his mom. I have also been loving the Modern Love podcast and Gimlet Media’s Sampler, too. Have you heard anything good lately?

Run: My last “Currently” post was in mid April. Since then, I’ve run two half marathons, two 5Ks and a 10 miler. Plus, I started training for the SF Marathon. Better late than never. It is in 49 days! I had some soreness and struggles (mental and physical) but I had a lot of fun and smiles in my miles, so I have no complaints!  Read more in my Global Running Day post. I am looking forward to a bunch of great races in July including the SF Marathon and Esprit de She.
