Friday Five: 5 Ways to Sleep Cooler When Summer Heats Up

I’m a hot sleeper and it’s only gotten worse since I’ve become a woman of a certain age. In the summer time, it can be especially tough to stay cool. I recently found Dagsmejan’s Cooling Pajamas and they sent a checklist for enjoying the best sleep during the summer months.

5 Ways to Sleep Cooler When Summer Heats Up

  • Keep the bedroom cool and dark with good ventilation and shade in the morning. They suggest improving cross-ventilation, using lighter bedding layers made with breathable materials and avoiding dense foam.
  • Take a lukewarm shower 60 – 90 minutes before bed to help the body temperature drop gradually. Bonus tip: Let your body air-dry slightly before toweling off—evaporation helps with extra cooling.
  • Wear light, breathable sleepwear. The Dagsmejan cooling pajamas are made with light, natural and sustainable materials. They are moisture wicking, have pockets and are cute and comfortable. They’re super light and are ideal pajamas for the warm months (or anytime pajamas for hot sleepers like me.)
  • Be sure to stay hydrated and avoid/reduce alcohol and heavy food in the evenings. They suggest eating lighter, plant-forward meals at dinner like grilled vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Also, consider hydrating desserts like watermelon or berries for dessert.
  • Keep a consistent sleep schedule to anchor your body’s rhythms even in summer. This is a general sleep hygiene tip but it helps with falling asleep and getting sounder sleep anytime even in the heat.
