Friday Five: 5 Ways to Fight the Winter Blues

Last year I did a few trips in January and February to warm sunny places. This year, I’ve been in Chicago since January 1st and I’m not going to lie, I’m having some winter blues. The Husband has been away skiing a bunch, so it’s easy for me to stay home like a hermit. I’m trying to snap out of it, so here are 5 ways to fight the winter blues.

1. Plan a vacation. If you live somewhere cold like me, planning a vacation or some long weekends away can be a lifeline. There are actually some studies that show people who make vacation plans are happier. I know that I’m happier when I have something to look forward to! I’m heading to California (twice) and NYC in March. That will help!

2. Get outside and get some fresh air. The air may be chilly but fresh air and sunshine just make you feel better. Lack of Vitamin D from sunlight can wreak havoc on your moods. I work from home much of the time, so I get cabin fever. Even running errands midday on a sunny day can brighten my mood. Note to self – fresh air helps even on cloudy days!

3. Visit with friends. Sometimes it’s easy to be a hermit in winter here in Chicago. I always feel better when I meet up with friends. I bailed out on some social events in the last few weeks, but I made plans for this weekend.

4. Exercise! I like to combine 2, 3 and 4 and go running outside with my friends. It’s a win-win-win. I’ve been training with a CARA (Chicago Area Runners Association) group for Boston and meeting up with friends for runs and some exercise classes.

5. Be grateful and help others! This one’s true no matter the season. Volunteering and helping friends and colleagues always makes me feel good. Cycle for Survival moved to May but we have a team again this year and I’ll be raising money for Alexandra’s Playground for the NYC Half – stay tuned.
