Friday Five: 5 Summer Travel Packing Tips

We’re heading out for our first international trip since February 2020. I’m can’t lie, I’m out of practice for packing. Adding to it, we’re planning to take a two week trip with only carry on bags. I’ve been planning for a while and I’ve remembered a few of my old “tricks.”

5 Summer Travel Packing Tips

Use packing cubes and reusable zip pouches to keep bags organized and to fit more items. I have zip pouches for cords, snacks and for vitamins, instant coffee and supplements. I pack my running clothes and underwear in one cube and other clothes in another. This also helps to stay organized on the trip and to be able to get ready more quickly for runs in the morning.

Pack travel sized toiletries in a clear reusable pouch. I have a separate travel toiletry kit that I always keep at the ready. One of my favorite items is my Mouthwashers foldable travel toothbrush. It has antimicrobial bristles so it stays fresh. Another great find is shampoo and conditioner bars. These small bars are compact but can be used by both of us for the whole trip. I’ve been using some from Nole that I got at Expo West. (Stay tuned for a review and giveaway!)

Bring a packable backpack. I have a ChicoBags travel pack that I love. It’s great for day hikes or runs and city use. It has zip pockets and a water bottle holders. I also have a Nanobag that I keep in my backpack. It fits in my pocket or small purse if I want to buy anything when I’m out and about.

Pack a reusable water bottle and travel mug. I always have a reusable water bottle for air travel and when I’m out and about. If I’m staying at an AirBnB or apartment style hotel, I also bring a travel mug. To fit the mug in my bag, I pack small items inside it or bring a stainless steel hot/cold bottle with a lid that locks like this Hydroflask bottle. Those can double for water and hot drinks.

Wear running shoes/hiking boots on the plane. I always wear my running shoes on the plane because they take up the most space of any of my shoes. I also bring a pair that’s near the end of the road and leave them behind if I have other items I want to bring back.

What are your best packing tips? Where are you headed this summer?
