Friday Five: 5 Reasons to Visit Greece!

It’s Friday, so I’m linking up with Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five. Last weekend, The Husband and I celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary. Time really flies. One thing that we recommend to any friends getting married is to take a “honeymoon” every year. It’s more than a vacation – it’s a special trip to celebrate our marriage. We love to travel, so this totally works for us.

At the Acropolis on our anniversary!

This year we took a 12 night trip to Greece. We’re here now. We started in Athens, visited Meteora and are now visiting the Peloponnesian Peninsula. It’s off season and we’ve been enjoying having the place to ourselves!

5 Reasons to Visit Greece

1. The unfreaking believably beautiful and varied landscapes. We loved the hilly, urban landscape in Athens, the sandstone mountains of Meteora, the mountain side splendor on Delphi and  the rocky beaches of Kardamyli. Tomorrow we’re headed to the southern tip of Greece on the Mani Peninsula and we’ve been told it’s unlike anything we’ve seen so far!

2. The delicious food. I’m a fan of Greek food but The Husband was less familiar. We’ve chowed down on fresh Greek Salads every day with grilled meats, seafood, souvlaki (for me) and lots of moussaka for him. The tomatoes, olives, olive oil and honey here are to die for. We’ve been enjoying the breads and eggs, too. The wine has been varied and delicious. We’ve yet to have Ouzo but we’ll have a toast to my dad with one before we leave.

3. The friendly, warm people (who pretty much all speak English). Everyone we’ve encountered has been friendly and helpful. We’ve enjoyed speaking to people and learning more about the life and customs here. People have been very open and interested in us, too.

4. To have your mind boggled by Ancient Civilization. We’re blown away by the vast amount of ancient artifacts and ruins we’ve seen. We visited the Acropolis in Athens, Delphi and Ancient Olympia and can’t get over the scale and complexity of the architecture and statuary. We were also laughing at all the times we’ve thought “Ancient Greeks… they’re just like us!” 😉

5. It’s surprisingly affordable and even touristy places don’t feel like a rip off. This is especially true in the off season (November to April). That being said, you can get a snack and a huge bottle of water for just a few Euros near the Acropolis. We also were struck by how there aren’t people trying to sell you something everywhere you turn. That’s a pleasant change of pace.

I’m short changing this trip in this post. We’re having a great time and I highly recommend the places we’ve stayed. I’ll create and share a list of highlights when I return.

Is Greece on your bucket list? If not, you should reconsider!

Have a great weekend!
