Friday Five: 5 Easy Healthy Eating Tips for ’19!

It’s Friday, so I’m linking up with Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five. It’s a new year and I’ve gotten a zillion and one emails with healthy tips. I’m not doing Whole30 or any kind of detox or cleanse – though it seems I’m the only who’s not. I find the only thing that works for me is to make small, healthy changes and to stick with them.

That said, I signed up for Elmhurst 5 Day #SimplerBetter New Year Challenge. Day 1 was on goal setting, Day 2 was on workouts, Day 3 was on simplifying your life and Day 4 was healthy eating tips. You can read the whole healthy eating post here.

Here are 5 great tips from the #SimplerBetter challenge that I’m going to follow:

1. Stock the fridge and pantry with healthy, minimally processed foods
. They recommend stocking up on fresh produce. I’m lucky enough to be able to grab fresh produce a few times a week. I also get Imperfect Produce deliveries every other week. They offer overstock or small/large/slightly strange (;)) produce. That’s less waste and a low price – a win-win. I’m also stocking up on hummus, soups and convenient healthy meals like harvest bowls from Daily Harvest. [Get 3 free cups with your first order with this link.]

2. Eat less sugar. This is the hardest one for me. They reminded us to check labels for sugar. Some common foods that contain sugar are breads, cereals and milk. Who knew? At least I can be more mindful of sugar in my food. That’s a good start.

3. Drink more water. Sometimes when we feel hungry, it’s because we’re actually thirsty. They have some great hydration tips like always have a water bottle near by, try hot water with lemon, add fruit or mint to your water. I love seltzer and La Croix water, too.

4. Try something new. I’m good at this one! I’m always on the look out for new healthy foods to try. A few things on deck (and coming to the blog soon) are Pan’s Mushroom Jerky, Wild Zora Real Quick Soup, Fishpeople Salmon Jerky and Buckwhats Noshes. They also (helpfully) suggest trying some new plant based milks, eating plant based for a day or trying a new recipe. Another goal of mine is to cook more and to try new recipes.

5. Slow down! Another one that I need to work on! They remind us, “one way to make better food and drink choices is to just slow down. Chewing slowly helps with digestion and it will also help you recognize more easily when you’re full.

They say (and I agree) that “no matter how big or small you choose to go, know that taking at least some step is better than taking no steps at all.” Amen!

What easy healthy eating tips are you going to try this year?

Have a great weekend!
