Friday Five: 5 Ways to Be Happier Now

It’s Friday, so I’m linking up with Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness for the new Friday Five 2.0.  I’ve had a bit of extra time and less travel lately which has been great. It’s gotten me thinking about small changes I’ve made to make myself happier and more content.

5 Ways to Be Happier Now

1. Unplug and go for a walk. We’re all so connected now. Lately, I’ve been stepping away from my computer and phone and heading out to walk by the lake. Studies show that walking, or other physical activity, increases happiness and I know it does for me. Disconnecting and taking in my surroundings helps, too.

2. Enjoy the view. I’m so fortunate to have a beautiful view from my window. Sometimes, all it takes to feel better is to look out for a few minutes. Not near a window or a nice view? Try looking at pictures of places or people you love. Images can bring back happy memories and good feelings.

3. Help someone or give with no expectations. Whether it’s a random act of kindness, doing a favor or volunteering, helping others is proven to increase happiness and satisfaction. Try it? What do you have to lose?

4. Be grateful for what you have. Write down three things every day that you’re grateful for. Gratitude is also proven to improve happiness. Check out the science of gratitude on Happify or listen to this special on WNYC.

5. Practice affirmations. It feels silly at first, but reminding yourself of things that are great about you makes you feel good. The first few times I tried this, I felt like I was in a Saturday Night Live skit. It does get easier. Plus, focusing on positive things makes you feel good. This beats negative self talk any day.

What tips do you have to be happier now?

Have a great weekend, friends!
