Friday Finds: Get an Inkling for Nat’l Reading Month, Spring Ahead + More

March is National Reading Month. The folks at  Inkling sent me a note to let me know that they offer a large library of classic books for FREE! You can read these online or on your iPad or smartphone. They said:
“We all have our own story time experiences! Do you remember Treasure Island, Oliver Twist, and the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn? We have all those classic stories available entirely FREE in our library packed with Inkling Classics of time-tested tales. You and your family can tap into these stories from your desktop or iPad and create even more storytime memories.”

I went over to check out their library and found many that I have read and many that are on my “to-read” list. Every few years, I have a binge read of classics that I missed or have simply forgotten. A few years ago, it was Grapes of Wrath and the Heart of Darkness.  Another time, it was “early-chick lit” from the Austen sisters and similar. And now, I think I will finally tackle Crime and Punishment and Middlemarch.

You can learn more about Inkling’s innovative approach to online learned and their other products HERE. You can download the app for iPad, iPhone, MAC or PC HERE.

What classics are on your MUST list?

This winter has been brutal in Chicago and many other places in the US. One of my favorite signs that spring will actually come has started is lots of emails about registering for spring races! (And hey, it’s not too late to do a little Couch to 5K for spring, people!)

RTGFL_Logo_201_216My Chicago Running Blogger buddy, Erin, is involved in one of my favorite local spring races, The Race That’s Good For Life (formerly Race for the Life That is Good) 5K. Why is it a favorite of mine? Here’s why:

  • It is a small, local race that attracts fast runners.
  • Women and men run separate so if you go with some opposite sex folks, you have an automatic cheering squad – reminds me (happily) of high school cross country. Also, women are first so I can cheer my men in after the cool down!
  • It is fast and flat.
  • It is in beautiful Oak Park, IL – Frank Lloyd Wright, anyone?

The race is Sunday, April 6, 2014. This year, they are adding new perks, including free race photos! And, the Good Life Race was named the best race in Chicagoland by the Chicago Area Runners Association for two years in a row (2012 & 2013). This races does GOOD, too.  All proceeds from race entry fees will be donated to the Oak Park-based Collaboration for Early Childhood. It is also reasonable at $35 through 2/28, but you can save more! Get $5 off the 5K run registration fee with code CHICAGOSBEST2014. That can be combined with their $3 CARA discount for a total of $8 off until March 31st.

See you there in SPRING?
