Healthy Eating in a Snap or with a Shake & Great Deals!

I found two apps this week that help folks stick to a healthy diet in an innovative way. One lets you take a photo of your food and estimates the calories to help you track at the ballpark level and one helps you come up with new, healthy snack ideas so that you don’t get bored of eating the same old things!

Take a pic to log your food and estimated calories

Meal Snap lets you take pictures of the meal you eat, and then “magically” tells you what food was in your meal. The magic? They analyze what is on your plate and then break out what you ate and also gives you a ballpark calorie range. Some sample meals people highlighted were a steak, rice and roasted asparagus plate at the local steakhouse which clocked in at between 329 and 434 calories. The app also lets you categorize your snapshots by meal type and/or snacks and keeps a running tally of your daily total (range). It not a bad way to count calories, though, it won’t be 100 percent accurate. Great for making sure you are in the ballpark for sure! (iOS only, $2.99)

While I was looking at this, I came across a reference to Daily Burn’s Food Scanner app.  It is now (a bit inexplicably) available with a version of Meal Snap for free with a bunch of other tools with the Daily Burn Tracker app (also available on Android).  Check it out! I will, too and will let you know what I find!

Shake a Snack helps you to keep snacky healthy and interesting. You shake your iPhone or iPod touch to watch the ingredients whiz by and land on one of over 300 snack recipes. You can choose from sweet or savory snacks and you can put in the ingredients you have on hand for easy snack ideas. You can even filter out ingredients you don’t like or choose to view only vegetarian or vegan recipes.  You can then save your favorite sweet and savory snack recipes for quick reference. Healthy snacking has never been more fun!
