Friday Finds: “Real-Virtual” Trainer, Fitness Games, Friend’s Finds and More

When I first saw this link, I thought it seemed kind of silly, but now I think it is pretty ingenious and wish that I had thought of it! A search engine to find and book a personal trainer for two-way video training?
Could be perfect for traveling, people with kids who can’t get to a gym or people who want training/advice but can’t afford a full service gym. Here is how it works:

1. Create a simple profile with information about your health, goals and equipment (if you have it).
2. Filter trainers based on a specific date/time, price, or training style that suits you.
3. Select a session or a package of multiple sessions designed to help you reach your goals. Schedule in advance or book on demand any time and pay.
4. Connect over LIVE, 2-WAY video.
5. Rate, review & track your progress

The sessions start at $10 for 25 minutes and go up to $250 (for 55 minutes for celebrity trainer Michael George) with the majority of 55 minute sessions at $65 or less.

I am curious to know what people think. Would you try it? I probably won’t at home but maybe on the road some day. Would you try it?

I have posted several times on fitness apps and have downloaded several. I have not actually used any of them yet (shame on me!) (My excuse: I am a creature of habit and cardio is king…) I work out with a trainer once a week and try to do core or yoga once a week, too. That said, I was also intrigued by this link to the 3 Fitness Game Apps from Well + Good.

1. I have posted about Run Zombie Run – but I have never tried it. It is an interval work out and social networking opp for running with an audio feature for the chase.

2. The second app is Teemo which “offers wholesome adventures to get your blood pumping. Climb Everest, hike the Inca Trail, or dash through a desert. The best part is you won’t go it alone. Just like in a relay race, you finish one leg of the journey, complete an exercise, and then pass the virtual baton to a friend via Facebook.” Hmmm. Another social networking play. Sounds like the trainers are good but I am not sure my 5:30 am workout times may not entice my FB friends!

3. Last one, Fitocracy which “turns exercise into a fierce competition.” As with any video game, you work your way through successively more challenging levels, earning points and rewards for each exercise regimen completed. You can play against more than 230,000 registered “Fitocrats,” borrow one of their workouts, or lean on them for advice and inspiration. Personally, I found even sharing activity on Daily Mile made me feel too competitive and was “just another thing” so I stopped – so I don’t think this one is for me.

Maybe I am just unusually motivated to exercise on my own, but none of these really does it for me. What do you think? Would a game help you to stay motivated for your workout?

Check out Mizuno’s “mezamashii” (warning – there is sound at this site!) – Mezamashii is the Japanese word for eye-opening, or brilliant. The Mezamashii Run Project is “Mizuno’s quest to deliver a more brilliant running experience to dedicated runners everywhere.” By joining the quest (read: signing up for their e-mail list), you will get exclusive offers and the chance to win Mizuno running shoes. (Plus you can read or submit awesome hiakus!)

Gaby sent me a great article in response to my piece on comparison being the thief of joy from the Atlantic Monthly Is Facebook Making Us Lonely? The conclusion is very profound. The question is what to do about it!

A Few Deals:
1. For Chicago friends, Refinery29 had a great piece with 6 Food Truck Deals:
– Mention that you read about The Little Salad Truck on Refinery29 and save 20% off of your order through the end of August.
– Mention you read about Caponie’s Express on Refinery29 and you’ll receive $1 off your total purchase and a free soda through the end of August.
– Mention that you read about ChiTown Tamale on Refinery29 and you’ll receive one free tamale with the purchase of two through the end of August.
– Find the Babycakes truck and say “I want some Baby!” and you’ll get a free bacon-filled, chocolate-covered waffle stick.
– Say “get Curried away” and you’ll get one free samosa until Tuesday, August 21.
– Mention that you read about Chicago Cupcake on Refinery29 and you’ll receive $.50 off your first cupcake through the end of August.

Don’t know how to find these? I have included links to their twitter pages that tell where and when! The article has more on what to get at each truck!

2. Hey runners – think there is still more heat coming this summer? Check out Active Schwaggle’s deal for $22 for RealXGear’s cooling towel and hat combo – 56% off and it includes shipping. I like the cooling towel I got from Mission Athletecare. (I don’t use it much…) This hat looks pretty wearable and there were certainly many days it would have been worth a try.

3. Here is another one from Refinery 29 that is not for me, but it may be for you! Like high end cosmetics? Check out this deal for 3 months of Glossy Box for $60. This is like Birchbox and some of the other non-cosmetics monthly sample boxes, but high end. The price is the same without this special code, but if you use this link, you get a special gift in November for being a Refinery 29 reader.

4. A great deal from Refinery 29 is to be had at MyPhotos which converts your photos into wall art. You can get a $43 voucher for just $18 or a $90 voucher for just $35. To break it down, for $18, you can get an 8×10 canvas, and for $35, you’ll get a 16×20 canvas (both including shipping!). That’s over half off custom-made art – and a great use for the vacation photos you rarely look at! You can use the voucher toward other styles, too!

Wow – that was a mouthful! Hope you have a great weekend. Let me know what you find, too!
