Tried It Tuesday: Vanilla Protein Face Off

I recently had the opportunity to try two new innovative protein powders and compare them head to head. One is a vegan protein powder from Everlast (which is why I have a zillion boxing metaphors running through my head) and one is a whey protein is from a new company called Zig. I tried them one after another will review side by side.

EverlastIn this corner… weighing in at 22 gram of protein and 110 calories per serving is the Everlast VP Pro Vegan Mix in Vanilla. Everlast VP is the “ultimate plant-based protein mix” using the highest grade blend of yellow pea, rice and hemp proteins to promote lean muscle growth and recovery.  It has no sugar, no lactose, no gluten and no GMOSs. It comes in vanilla only and is flavored with stevia. Everlast VP comes in a 31 serving bag that is now priced at $39.99 (on sale) so it costs about $1.21 per serving.

Zig is a just-add-water portable protein shake. With a single serving of premium whey protein powder sealed inside, you only need to add water, shake and drink for a fresh shake while you’re on the go.  It has 2g of sugar and no gluten. It comes in vanilla and chocolate. Zig is sold in 6 pouch boxes for about $3/pouch on Amazon.

Well folks, this one may be a draw with a slight lead to Everlast. The Everlast was the creamiest of the vegan protein powders I have tried. It mixed well with cold water and a blender cup. I did use a spoon to help with the bottom. That said, it had a mild pleasant taste and was downright frothy. It reminded me of the Alba Shakes I used to love as a kid. I added some coconut flavored Better Stevia from the Now Foods loot that I won and that was really tasty. I do love the blender package and convenience of the Zig. It was so easy and blended really well. The taste is similar and whey protein is naturally creamier. This is perfect for travel or the gym and the packaging is really clever and functional. I added some Better Stevia to the Zig to be fair and it was also very tasty.

This bout was almost a draw but the Everlast is a cleaner, dairy and sugar free option, it wins for me.

I would recommend both of these options based on your diet/needs. If you eat dairy, and are on the go, the Zig is super ingenious and very functional. If you are vegan and are looking for a clean, natural protein source, go for the Everlast. Try both! You can keep up with Everlast Nutrition on the web, Twitter and Facebook. Plus, get 5% off at Everlast Nutrition (and free shipping for a limited time) with code ERICAFINDS. You can keep up with Zig on the web, Twitter and Facebook. This week only get one 6 pack of Vanilla Zig free when you buy one for $17.99 at Amazon with code ZIGFF620.

Have you tried these new protein options? What is your go-to?
