Guest Post: How to Look Your Best for Your Holiday Photos!

While I am away, I am getting a little help from my friends! Pam Lagger is a great friend who happens to be an awesome Chicago photographer who specializes in babies, children and family. Pam has a great eye and a very laid back, fun style. She puts everyone at ease and takes great pictures to cherish long after the kids grow up! Pam has some great tips on what to wear for this year’s holiday photos.

Can’t decide what to wear for your holiday family photo? No need to break out the matching white polo shirts! Here are few of the “what to wear” tips I give my clients.

1. Add color + texture. For family photos it looks nice if everyone wears two or three coordinating colors. Pick colors that flatter everyone, and add them into each outfit. Try to mix in some texture and pattern for visual interest. whether it’s a plaid or striped shirt, chunky sweater, tulle skirt, denim jacket or lace dress. Layering looks great too! I find that it’s easiest to start with one item of clothing that you really love—preferably with some color or pattern—and then choose everyone else’s outfit around it.

2. Accessorize, but don’t overdo it. Accessories such as a necklace, bracelet, scarf, hat or a hair bow can really add interest to a photo. Pick one or two of your favorites and stop there. Too many accessories can start to look too busy.

3. Avoid “fussy” clothes for little kids. When choosing an outfit for a little one, keep in mind that kids are constantly moving.  Dress your kids in clothes that won’t get “messed up” too easily. If you put your two-year-old in an oxford shirt, tie and sweater, I can guarantee you that his tie will be crooked and his collar will end up half-in-half-out! If you’re okay with a rumpled look, then that’s fine—rumpled can be cute! But if you’re not, stick with a sweater over a t-shirt or a simple button-down shirt. For girls’ dresses, think about how the dress will fall when she sits down. For example, a stiff cotton shift dress will looks great as long as she’s standing up, but will look crumpled as soon as she sits. Choose dresses that will move with her and that fall nicely when she’s sitting. I recommend trying on all clothing before your photo session to see how it looks both sitting and standing. For a baby girl, use bloomers or leggings to cover up her diaper.

4. Watch your feet. Everyone knows, shoes complete the outfit! Ditch the clunky tennis shoes and put on your favorite shoes or boots. Men, make sure they’re clean and shined!

5. Make sure it fits. Try all clothes on the kids before the photo session to make sure they fit. For brand new clothes, get rid of creases by washing them before your photo session (or ironing if you do that sort of thing!)
