Hate cancer? Me, too! Some families are impacted more than others. My friend, Deb, is an awesome gal here in Chicago who is a runner, triathlete, lawyer and passionate supporter of many causes including the Starlight Children’s Foundation and the American Cancer Society. Deb and her sister, Jen, raised $15,000 for the American Cancer Society in honor of their father, Steve, who passed away in 2009 from thyroid cancer. I am joining Deb, Jen and many of their friends on September 8th to run the Chicago Half Marathon with “Honey’s Runners” to raise money for the American Cancer Society in honor of their mom, Honey. Honey lost her battle with lung cancer on Mother’s Day this year.

I asked Deb to tell us a bit about her mom:

“The best way to describe my mom is actually by her name: HONEY. Yup, that is what her dad said when she was born – “oh, what a Honey” – and he couldn’t have been more right. Though my sister and I surely (and often) took my mom for granted, we both understand and can appreciate how special she was and what an amazing legacy she has left for us to follow.

When we were growing up, our mom was called “Aunt Honey” by more people than I can count. Not just by our cousins, but by the children of my parents’ friends and even by our friends. Over the last decade, “Aunt Honey” became “Grandma Honey” and mom thrived in her new role. Not a day would go by that my sister wouldn’t get a call or email from my mom asking about Cam and Samantha (and later her great-grandson Ryan) and spending time with them became her number one priority. She spent hours helping with homework, going to football games, building roomfuls of legos and – of course – there was plenty of time for snuggling.

It was tough to catch my mom without a smile on her face. She always saw the best in people – especially us. (Trust me — that wasn’t always easy!) Mom never let harsh words or criticism bring her down, but saw these as ways to learn and improve. Maybe I’m biased, but I don’t know how much better she could have gotten.

My mom died on Mother’s Day after a short but painful battle with lung cancer. My sister and I (along with many friends – near and far) are honoring her by participating in the Chicago Half Marathon/5K on September 8th as part of “Honey’s Runners”. Our goal is to raise $15,000 for the American Cancer Society so that we can create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Thank you in advance for supporting our efforts.”
