It’s been a cold, dark (literally and figuratively) January so far. This year, I’ve been in Chicago since January 1st and I’m not going to lie, I’m having some winter blues. The Husband has been away skiing a bunch, so it’s easy for me to stay home like a hermit. I’m trying to snap out of it, so here are five ways to fight the winter blues.

1. Plan a vacation. If you live somewhere cold like me, planning a vacation or some long weekends away can be a lifeline. There are actually some studies that show people who make vacation plans are happier. I know that I’m happier when I have something to look forward to! I’m heading to California and Philly in March and maybe somewhere in February. That will help!
2. Get outside and get some fresh air. The air may be chilly but fresh air and sunshine just make you feel better. Lack of Vitamin D from sunlight can wreak havoc on your moods. Even running errands midday on a sunny day can brighten my mood. Note to self – fresh air helps even on cloudy days!
3. Visit with friends. Sometimes it’s easy to be a hermit in winter here in Chicago. I always feel better when I meet up with friends. I’ve enjoyed some art exhibits, parties and dinners out in the past few weeks. It’s always tough to get out the door, but I’m glad for all of the times that I did.
4. Exercise! I like to combine 2, 3 and 4 and go running outside with my friends. It’s a win-win-win. In the deep freeze, I bundle up and head to the gym for my daily exercise. I also do household chores with a bit of gusto for extra movement on the coldest days.
5. Be grateful and help others! This one’s true no matter the season. Volunteering and helping friends and colleagues always makes me feel good. Cycle for Survival is coming up in February. This is my 15th year participating. I’m also working with a group that supports local migrants in Chicago and planning to participate in a Valentine’s Day gift drop at a local senior living community.
