2023 has been a pretty great running year for me. I kept up my run streak and hit 3 years on February 20. I ran 5 marathons, 6 half marathons, an 8K, a 4 miler, a couple of 5Ks and a 1 mile race. I did run tours in Copenhagen (with the founder of Go! Running Tours) and Mexico City. I led more than a dozen run tours in Chicago and a bunch of runs with A Sweat Life and Arc’teryx Chicago. I clocked just over 2,500 miles! Here’s to many more miles and smiles in 2024!
Here is my 2023 running year in review:
# of Miles Run – 2502.6. Average 6.9 miles/day and 48.1/week. This is down slightly from last year.
# of Races Run– 17 – that’s one more than last year. I ran 5 marathons, 6 half marathons, an 8K, 1 four miler, 2 5Ks, a mile race and a one hour indoor race.
# of Miles Run in Races –232. Up from 31.5 last year!
# of Age Group Awards– 2. Down 5 from last year
Run Streak – I continued my run streak (started 2/20/20) and am now at day 1,410.
Fun Race Destinations– NYC, Boston, Sacramento, Ojai
Coolest Non-Race Runs: – Copenhagen and Mexico City with Go! Running Tours.
Best Race– CIM (California International Marathon). It wasn’t my fastest this year but I felt great and ran every step with Christy helping her to complete her first marathon.
Worst Race– I hate to say this but the NYC Marathon despite good conditions was my worst race this year. I didn’t run a smart race and I felt awful. But it was still a great weekend.
Personal Records (PRs)- 0. No surprises here.
Star Sightings: None.
Number of Sidelining Injuries– 1ish. My hamstring protested in the Chicago Half marathon and I wound up hobbling for a few weeks. It turned out to be a back issue and my chiropractor and massage therapist sorted me out and I was able to successfully run Chicago despite the injury AND tripping over a poncho at the start line.
Best Running Advice I Gave This Year: Don’t forget – you paid for this… so it should be fun.
Best New Running Product(s) I Tried: I love Kinfield’s anti chafe and other plant based active self care products and KineSys sunscreen. I used my Hi Love Travel “Life’s a Marathon Runner” water resistant packs and bags a ton and love them (and every other pattern, too!) I tried a bunch of new electrolyte/fuel products and some faves were Plink!, IV2 and Seattle Gummy Company’s HydraFuel. Go to giveaways or running and check out my reviews.

I have a bunch of races on the calendar for next year. After running 5 marathons and 6 half marathons this year, I swore to be more careful with my sign ups for 2024. But you KNOW I haven’t been careful. On the books for 2024 so far NYC Half (March), Shamrock Shuffle 8K (March), Chicago 13.1 (June), Madison Half (August), Berlin Marathon (September) and Chicago Marathon (October). I’m trying to get a charity number for London (April) and will sign up for NYC (November), of course. So yeah – I’m incorrigible. Check out my 2023 running highlight reel here.
How was your year in running?? Please tell me about it in the comments.
Here’s to a healthy, speedy and happy 2023 and beyond!
