We had the opportunity to try Diana’s Bananas last year and are big fans. In fact, The Husband says there are one of his favorite things we’ve tried for the blog – and that’s saying something. We’ve tried all the things! Ironically, he doesn’t even eat bananas if they’re not frozen, so these are really a tasty treat.
Diana’s Bananas was born at the 1984 Taste of Chicago Festival. They started with chocolate covered strawberries and tried bananas. By the end of the festival, over 25,000 chocolate-covered bananas had been sold. They then started searching for the best bananas to use and landed on Ecuador. Then they worked with a number of local Chicago chocolate makers to perfect the coating. After being a “festival food,” they worked with Jewel to create a frozen food product that could be shipped coast to coast.
One really cool thing about Diana’s is that they use upcycled bananas. 30% of food in the world goes to waste including many, many tons of bananas. Diana’s uses small, solo or slightly irregular bananas that would otherwise be wasted and turns them into yummy treats. That’s a win-win!
Diana’s has chocolate covered banana halves and banana bites. The banana halves come in four varieties – dark chocolate, milk chocolate, salted caramel and peanut butter cup. The banana bites come in milk chocolate and dark chocolate.
We tried all of the flavors and forms. The Husband LOVES the milk chocolate bananas and bites. He also enjoys the peanut butter cup and salted caramel. I love the bites for dessert – both milk and dark. I didn’t get my hands on any peanut butter cup, but I imagine that would also be right up my alley, too.
