For the past few years, plant based milks have been all the rage. Since I limit my dairy (it makes me itch), I have tried so many of them. I’m going to share five options that I’ve tried recently with my opinions. Of course, for me it’s always about compatibility with coffee. I included a few other uses, too!
Five Plant Based Milks to Try Now
Three Trees makes “clean, delicious, and nourishing plant-based foods.” Their organic plant-based milks are made only of real food ingredients you’d find in your kitchen pantry. These fresh milks are naturally good for you and are “closest to homemade.” They come in five varieties including Almond, Pistachio, Oat and Seed, Vanilla Bean Almond and Black Sesame Almond.
I tried Pistachio and Oat & Seed (now Oatmilk with Seeds) and shared the Almond with a friend. I liked the taste of the Pistachio. It was very unique and tasty, but not great in coffee (for me). I used it in smoothies and with granola. The Oat & Seed was good in coffee, mixed well and has a better nutrition profile. Find Three Trees at these stores nationwide.
WhatIF Foods BamNut Milk is made with Bambara groundnuts sourced directly from smallholder farming communities in West Africa and other places around the world. These “hearty little legumes” grow in poor soil conditions and arid climates, without need for fertilizers, or pesticides. The milks have no stabilizers, preservatives, artificial ingredients or added sugar. They make three varieties Everyday, Barista and Airy.
I shared the Airy and tried Everyday and Barista. The Barista is creamy and mixes well with coffee and lattes. It has a slightly nutty flavor. I liked it in my coffee if I added some cinnamon. Find these on Amazon.
Upright Foods has a new instant shelf-stable oatmilk. It’s made with just oats, a blend of vitamins and minerals, and natural flavors like chocolate and vanilla. Each cup has 8 grams of plant based protein plus calcium, vitamins A, B12, D and plant-based prebiotic fiber. You just add water, so it’s great on the go. It comes in Unsweetened, Vanilla and Chocolate.
I liked the Unsweetened and Vanilla in my coffee. One caveat, I used a milk frother to mix the powder in. When I didn’t, it was clumpy. This product is good in coffee and blended smoothies. You can get a sample pack of each for $5 here or find it on Amazon.
Lattini makes plant based milk with sunflower seeds. It’s free of dairy, gluten, nuts and soy. Sunflower seeds are a sustainable crop, so this milk is good for you and for the environment. They’re also an excellent source of Calcium, Vitamin E and B12. They make Original, Unsweetened and Chocolate in shelf stable containers.
I used original and unsweetened in my coffee. They do have a light sunflower seed taste. They mix in well and I added a pinch of cinnamon to complement the taste. Find Lattini on Amazon.
Willa’s is the only oat milk to use the whole entire oat, resulting in a rich and deliciously smooth texture. Made with just 1 g of oat sugar per cup, this oat milk provides the most protein and prebiotic fiber of any oat milk. Operating with a “Zero waste and better for the planet,” process Willa’s is better for you and the planet. Willa’s comes in four varieties – Creamy, Original, Barista and Dark Chocolate.
I love Original and Creamy in my coffee. They mix well and taste great. We use the Original in cereal and granola, too. The Dark Chocolate is vegan and has Raaka cocoa and is sweetened with maple sugar. I’m excited to try it. Find Willa’s on Amazon, Foxtrot (get $10 when you create an account online) and other specialty retailers.
