Lauren and I “found” liina‘s spirulized protein powder at an A Sweat Life event this summer. I also learned about it from its founders earlier in the year. Liina is “spirulina products company, with the simple mission of making spirulina taste good.” Why? Spirulina is an incredible superfood and it’s sustainable.
Why Spirulina? Spirulina doubles in growth every day and is 400x more effective at removing CO2 from the air than a tree. They say, “as a sustainable food source, algae has the power to improve our planet and relationship to food.” Spirulina is a blue-green microalgae that transforms carbon dioxide into protein, iron and vitamins. It’s good for your skin, joints and immune system. Learn more here.
Liina’s first product is a vanilla + coconut protein powder. It has 7 ingredients: Chickpea Protein Powder, Oat Milk Powder, Coconut Milk Powder, MCT Oil Powder, Natural Flavors, Spirulina Powder, Stevia Extract. It’s vegan, free of gluten, soy and dairy and contains no added sugar. Each serving has 16 grams of protein. They say to pick a base and “blend or shake, and enjoy the power of algae!”
I mixed liina into Unsweetened Vanilla Oat Malk with ice in a shaker. Even though the powder was nearly white, the blue spirulina made it a pretty blue. The coconut milk powder and MCT give it a rich and thick texture. It tastes really good and it’s very filling. You have to like coconut because it has a nice coco-nutty flavor.
Lauren made a smoothie with liina and banana, spinach, blueberries, cauliflower, chia seeds, almond milk. She’s a huge fan. She especially loves the clean ingredients.
