I met the team behind Ziba Foods at Expo East this year. Ziba Foods is an artisanal nut and dried fruit company that works with small-scale farms and co-ops in Afghanistan. They offer a variety of heirloom and wild-grown superfoods, dried fruits and nuts. Their packaging is beautiful and the flavors are amazing.
Working directly with small-scale farms and cooperatives, Ziba sources the highest quality agricultural products. Many are grown wild without active cultivation. They combine traditional hand sorting with modern food safety standards. Since its inception, Ziba has maintained a constant focus on supporting and improving the role of women in Afghan society. Ziba is a partner of the EFI Food Initiative, a United Nations program. The EFI Food Initiative is working to connect food artisans from developing countries to socially and environmentally conscious consumers.
Ziba dried fruit and nuts come from plants whose traits pass from generation to generation naturally. The nuts and dried fruit draw their flavor from the geographies they’re grown in and handling by the farmers. In Afghanistan, things have remained unchanged for centuries. The result is a better-tasting, nutritious, all-natural range of products that “grow where they were meant to grow and taste how they were meant to taste.”
Ziba has five heirloom varieties. They are Sun Dried Figs, Sweet Apricot Kernels, Heirloom Almonds Shakhurbai (Dry Roasted and Salted), Heirloom Almonds Gurbandi (Raw) and Kishmish Raisins. They have two wild grown varieties. They are Dried White Mulberries and Baby Pistachio Kernels. The wild grown varieties have typically only been available to foragers and are just as nature intended them.
I’ve been loving these fresh, unique nuts and dried fruit. The almonds and pistachios are small and are so flavorful. The pistachios are great out of the bag or on a salad or sprinkled on a pureed soup. The sweet apricot kernels are tasty and have a unique flavor. The figs are amazing. I love the single serve packs for travel or to be packed in a lunch. I shared some with my brother and Lauren and there were great reviews all around.
