One of my favorite new, healthy snacks from this year’s NCA Sweets & Snack Show was skinless popcorn from Papa’s Pops. If you missed my Sweets & Snacks recap, you can check it out here.
Papa’s Pops was created as a solution to a common popcorn problem for the founder’s grandchildren. His five grandchildren loved popcorn but hated how it got stuck in their teeth, dental work and gums. It took years, but “Papa” found the right ingredients, process and seasonings and made snacks that the kids loved without the kernel issues. He asked them what to call it and they said “Papa’s Pops.”
What’s the deal with with the skin on popcorn? Inside each kernel of traditional popcorn is a tiny droplet of water surrounded by the hull (or skin). As the kernel is heated, this droplet of water turns into steam and builds pressure inside the kernel. When the hull can no longer contain the pressure, the kernel explodes and makes popcorn. With Papa’s Pops’ innovative process, they remove the skin and keep just the yummy popped snack!
Papa’s Pops are made with non-GMO ingredients, are gluten free and contain no preservatives. They also contain no trans fats or cholesterol. Three of six flavors are vegan.
Papa’s Pops come in six yummy flavors. They are Sweet & Salty, Sweet Cinnamon, Smokin’ BBQ, Creamy Ranch, White Cheddar and Honey Mustard and Onion.
I ate Sweet & Salty first and downed it with no photos. I expected that it or Sweet Cinnamon would be my favorite. I had a big surprise when Creamy Ranch was my top pick of the six. I’m not usually a ranch person, but this spice blend was addictive and I think it works best with this puffed corn. Sweet & Salty is a close second. Someone asked me if these are like corn nuts. I’d say they are more like puffed corn/popcorn and have a nice crunch but are not hard. I enjoy Papa’s Pops and love not having to worry about my dental work!
