March 19th is World Sleep Day! What’s World Sleep Day? It’s an annual event intended to be a celebration of sleep and a call to action on important issues related to sleep. It’s organized by the World Sleep Society and “aims to lessen the burden of sleep problems on society through better prevention and management of sleep disorders.”
5 Tips for Better Sleep
Avoid heavy meals, alcohol or caffeine for 3 or 4 hours before bed. One thing that’s been easier for me during COVID times is less heavy meals and drinks before bed. I do miss the socializing but I definitely sleep better without eating later and drinking.
Stop looking at screens at least 30 minutes before bed. Stop using electronic devices 30 minutes before bed. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that you should stop using electronic devices, like your cellphone, at least 30 minutes before bedtime. Instead, grab the book that’s been tucked away in your nightstand and start reading before bed. I use a Kindle Paperwhite on the “Dark Mode” which is better for night time and not getting too much blue light.
Use your bed for sleep (and sex) only. Train your body to sleep in bed. Don’t work or watch TV in bed if you can help it. No TV in the bedroom has been my rule for the last 20+ years and I will never go back. I do like to read in bed and we’ve been doing the Spelling Bee some mornings, but I feel like I’m good on this one.
Keep the room at a comfortable temperature, well ventilated and block out noise and light. Sleep temperature is very personal. I prefer the room to be cold and to snuggle under the blankets. We don’t use black out shades and usually wake with the natural light at home. We’re also used to city noises.
Treat yourself to a good mattress with comfortable bedding and sleep accessories. We love our firm pillow top mattress and spend extra on high quality sheets (most we’ve had for many years). My friends from Kitsch sent me a Satin Sleep Set with their “go-to night time essentials.” I already use their satin pillow case to protect my hair and skin (and it’s nice and cool!). The set includes a satin sleep mask and hair tie. This is a great Mother’s Day idea!
