I met Seattle Gummy Company at Expo East this year. They were highlighting their functional fruit gummies, but I sweet talked them into letting me try the Mocca Shots. These are caffeinated gummies with B vitamins to boost performance. They’re perfect before an early morning run. They also sent me their Ernergon Qube Performance Gummies to try on my long runs.
Seattle Gummy Company was founded by Dr. Connie Wan. Dr. Wan was fascinated with the absorption of drugs under the tongue or in the mouth. She initially started by developing a gummy to deliver aspirin to patients having heart attacks. She realized that gummies are a great way to deliver active ingredients. Her team has also improved the taste while maintaining the efficacy and absorption.
Seattle Gummy Company has expanded its line to include a variety of functional gummies. These include Energy (with caffeine and B12), Performance (B vitamins, ginseng and caffeine), Recover (BCAAs, B-complex and ginger), Functional Fruit Multivitamin, Functional Fruit Prenatal and Beauty (Vitamin B complex, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Zinc, biotin and collagen). All of the gummies are vegan, gluten free, non-GMO and made in the USA.
The team sent me Mocca Shots and the Energon Qube Performance Gummies. I decided to give these a try on my long runs for this year’s NYC Marathon. Expo East was right before my first 20 miler this cycle. I got my shipment right after that, so I used them on my subsequent 20 miler, 17 miler and my last long run of 15.5 miles.
I’m really into caffeine and swear by Run Gum. The Mocca Shots are similar in that they both have caffeine and B vitamins. The Mocca Shots absorb much faster than coffee and they taste good, too. I used one pack (two gummies) for 200 mg of caffeine before my long runs. That’s like two cups of coffee. These work really well. I felt alert but not jittery. They also didn’t upset my stomach at all which is important. These are great for any time you need a caffeine boost – not just for running.
The Energon Qube Performance Gummies have two varieties. The Power Up are for before and during exercise and the Recover are for after the workout. There are 4 gummies in a package and each package has 90 calories.
I used the Power Up gummies on my long runs, too. I brought 2 packages along and ate 1 or 2 gummies every few miles after the first 7 or 8 miles. I usually eat a small energy bar before I run and wait an hour to start fueling. That works for me. The Power Up gummies work great. Again, no stomach issues and I liked the boost I felt during my miles. I’ve tried the Recover gummies in the latter miles and after the run and I like those, too.
