You may remember my friends from Kuli Kuli Foods. I checked out Kuli Kuli’s Moringa Superfood Bars a few years back. At the time, I had never heard of moringa – a superfood ingredient. [Here’s the post.] Moringa is gluten-free, vegan and is a great source of fiber, calcium and antioxidants. Moringa is the only plant that contains a complete protein, iron, calcium and vitamins. Where did Kuli Kuli find moringa? Kuli Kuli founder, Lisa Curtis, was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Niger. After a few months with limited fruits and vegetables, she found herself experiencing early signs of malnutrition — a condition that affects over 18 million children across West Africa. A friend told Lisa about moringa, a local tree with highly nutritious leaves and handed her a bag of kuli-kuli, a Hausa food made from peanuts, to make a delicious, nutty moringa dinner. Lisa wrote to tell me some awesome news! Kuli Kuli was recently awarded the Whole Foods Market Supplier of the Year as the top “Women Owned Supplier.” As America’s leading moringa brand, Kuli Kuli has seen over 200% growth with its line of moringa products. Moringa grows on trees and as part of Kuli Kuli’s supply chain the company has planted over 1 million trees across West Africa and South America.
Earlier this year, moringa was identified by a variety of sources as “the superfood of 2018.” They say, “like chia, acai, and matcha before it, moringa is making the transition from being virtually unknown to becoming the next big superfood. What makes moringa unique is that it grows abundantly in places where malnutrition is systemic, and offers nutrition, livelihoods and environmental restoration to local communities. By importing some of the moringa to the US, Kuli Kuli has created an international market for moringa and a sustainable livelihood for communities around the world.”
For Earth Month, Kuli Kuli Foods is highlighting an inspiring figure in the moringa movement. Meet Pierrette, a mother of five, a moringa farmer and entrepreneur from Benin, West Africa. After tragedy hit her family, she formed a moringa farming cooperative and was able to pull herself and 133 women members out of poverty. Pierrette’s story affirms the moringa’s potential, and reminds us why Kuli Kuli was started.
