Next Sunday, I’ll toe the line at my 17th running of the New York Marathon. If you’re wondering how I’ve gotten in so many times, you can read this post. Since 2006, I’ve had to travel in for my race each of the 7 times I’ve run since. Packing everything I need is super important. You’d think you could buy anything you need in NYC and you usually can. I’ve had some mixed luck finding the right energy bars so I bring my own. I usually pick up gels at the expo since liquids have been banned.
I pack everything in my carry on bags. I don’t want to risk checking. This year, I have two work meetings to attend and will be gone for almost a week. The good news is that The Husband is making a quick trip so I can have him bring me work clothes and/or take home anything extra that I want to bring back.
I start with my outfit and running shoes. I check the temps and bring “throw away” clothes. I use the “no baggage” option and don’t check anything. There are a few hours where you need to keep warm on Staten Island. I bring old sweats and running gear/jackets to wear and discard.
There are some key “accessories” that I’ve already set out. They are:
- CEP Compression socks – I’ve worn these black CEP Compression socks for the last bunch of NY Marathons. I am a big fan and a CEP Compression ambassador. I’ve done well with the sock part (no blisters) and like the snug fit on my calves to keep the blood circulating.
- Lightweight gloves – I wear short sleeves (and sometimes arm sleeves) but I like gloves to keep warm. I sometimes lose one if I tuck them in my belt or shorts. The likelihood of losing one glove is inversely proportional to the cost.
- Nathan Adjustable belt – Since I had a health issue in 2011, I started carrying my phone in a Spibelt. A few years ago, I switched to this Nathan one and it has been great.
- LOKSAK waterproof bag – I put my phone in this waterproof bag. You can use your phone through these bags. It’s pretty magical!
- Run Gum – I am loving this caffeinated gum developed by Olympic Runner Nick Symmonds. NYC starts pretty late (9:50 this year, I think) so I like to have a cup’s worth of caffeine (or two) without the extra liquid. Check out my review HERE.
- Body Glide – I’ve tried and liked many anti-chafe products. The first one I ever tried was Body Glide. You know what? It’s still the best for me. The folks from Body Glide sent me a mini stick that’s perfect for travel and one to share with a lucky reader, too! This new 0.35 oz stick is easy to bring with you wherever you go. Check out a recent review HERE.
- Sunscreen and chapstick- Because it’s not summer, I sometimes forget this one, but I’m not getting any younger and neither is my skin.
I have my running accessories set for next Sunday. As I mentioned, Body Glide sent me an extra mini stick for a reader. I’m going to add some Run Gum, a pair of lightweight gloves, a LOKSAK and a pair of CEP Compression sleeves. Want to win? Leave a comment and tell me what’s in your racing/travel gear bag.
