Someone recently asked me if I get tired of running the same race every year when I mentioned that I would be doing my 16th NYC Marathon today. I thought about it for a second and said “no.” For me, NYC is like many other traditions. It is a time for friends, family and folklore. Because I moved to Chicago in 2006, NYC is a homecoming. My friends make a special effort to see me. I joyfully introduce new people into the fold. I share my knowledge and learn from others.
Before I came in to the city, I visited By Pond Farm on the way to see my brother and Dan. I even got Dan to do a shake out with me!
My pre-race weekend is full of fun, family and friends…
This year, I met up with Mahala at the expo and we chatted with a bunch of runners in various lines. It seemed very commercial with some cool exhibits from the big guys but not a lot of freebies or things to try. I left hungry which was a bummer!
This year was also my first year at the “15+ and streakers party.” With 15 finishes, I was a baby. The person who I met who had the most was 39 finishes. I spoke to a man with 34 who used to run close to three hours and hopes to finish in under six hours now. It was so cool to hear the stories and pretty unbelievable to be included in this select group.
I did my traditional 6 mile shake out in a new way. I met up with a group from Chicago and my friend, Lauren, from NYC. We weaved a bit and got to the Reservoir and enjoyed a good run and catch up. I now know even more Chicago runners!
I met up with a bunch of other friends, too. I met marathon pal, Kristy, who is sitting out this year to have a baby due in December for lunch. I met Marie and Grace for dinner as I have many years past.
I stayed with my awesome friends and their boys as I have many years since we moved. I participated in their Halloween traditions and enjoyed catching up with them (while I was not running around.) I’m looking forward to our evening together after the race and them cheering me on in Central Park.
Do I get tired of running the same race every year? No way. I savor the traditions my friends, old and new, and enjoy a wonderful homecoming. If you need me the first Sunday in November, you know where I will be!
Here’s to hoping for a good run and to lots of smiles and new memories to share. Like they said at the expo, “NYC it’s a big race, go run it!”
Godspeed runners! See you on the other side!
