The girls and I were heading to cheer for the Steelhead 70.3 and realized that we all saw the same link for Best and Worst Nutrition Bars from Well & Good NYC. We pulled up the link and started discussing it. We were all intrigued by Oatmega Bars. They said, “Hundt discovered this Austin-based brand recently and fell hard for the tasty, low-sugar, gluten-free bars made with mostly organic ingredients and whey protein from grass-fed cows. This chocolatey one has 14g of protein, 7g of fiber, and added fish oil (that you don’t taste!) for the essential fatty acids.” Fish oil that you don’t taste. We were up for it.
I told the Kristin and Stacy that I would be on the lookout for Oatmega Bars. As luck would have it, the next day, I saw some Oatmega Bars at Finds’ fave Snap Kitchen. They had Chocolate Peanut Crisp, Vanilla Almond Crisp and Chocolate Mint Crisp. Of course, I bought all three. I tried Chocolate Peanut Crisp and immediately emailed them to see if they wanted me to do a review. Why? The bar was delicious, nutritious and the company donates bars to in local communities, as well. Oatmega wrote back and offered to send me ALL of the flavors for me to try and some to share.
Before I tell you about the bars and flavors, I want to tell you a little about the company. Originally called Give Bar, the founder Trevor lost his sister to breast cancer. At that time, he “started to think about food differently, almost as medicine, and overhauled his diet, focusing on small frequent meals that contained high-quality proteins, healthy fats, and antioxidants.” He was not satisfied with nutrition bars on the market so he made his own and shared them with friends. This year the socially responsible team underwent a re-brand which included advocacy and giving back as part of our their new mission. Their business model is simple: “Heart first. Business second. Nutrition Shared.”
Oatmega bars are gluten free, non-GMO, have 7g of fiber, only 5g of sugar, 300mg of Omega-3s and 14g of protein per bar. They come in 8 flavors: White Chocolate Raspberry Crisp, Vanilla Almond Crisp, Wild Blueberry Crisp, Mint Chocolate Crisp, Brownie Crisp, Chocolate Peanut Crisp, Lemon Chia Crisp and Chocolate Coconut Crisp.
I tried all of the flavors and shared a bunch, too! The consensus is a wild two thumbs up. Susie emailed me with the title “so I’m in love with the Oatmega Bars.” I asked her for her favorite and she said “Vanilla Almond and Chocolate Peanut so far.” She then posted a love letter to Oatmega on her blog. Kristin and Stacy, the original ladies, love them – especially White Chocolate and Vanilla Almond. Wendy and Jeff tried Wild Blueberry and White Chocolate Raspberry on our wine country trip and they both loved the taste and texture. We all agreed that they tasted just like the fruit in the name. Zack took down three after our recent half marathon and said “It’s nice to stumble upon an energy bar that actually has a healthy nutrient profile (low simple sugar/carb, high protein, good fat, etc) that also tastes good. I expected Oatmega to taste like my fish-oil capsules, but not the case… plenty sweet without much sugar and they have crisps baked in which give nice texture.“His wife, Sarah, grabbed one from his reach and said, “I thought that they kind of tasted like an oaty-protein ‘breakfast bar.’ I appreciated the high amount of protein without being a ‘wannabe Snickers’ like a lot of the higher content protein bars. Plus, I appreciate the additional omega 3s.” My friend, Jonathan, tweeted about them recently, too. He works for a nutrition company! I have heard the feedback that they are like another popular bar (rhymes with guest) but are “awesome, natural tasting and not gross!” 😉
I am a huge fan of Oatmega bars! I like the taste and texture. My faves are Lemon Chia Crisp, Vanilla Almond Crisp and Chocolate Peanut Crisp. The bars are easy on the stomach, too. I have tried them before long runs and races. I like the added nutrients and high quality ingredients and I love the company’s mission. It’s a win-win-win.
