Last summer, I saw a great article in Epicurious on eating healthy on the go in summer for you and your family. They offer suggestions for when you are on the road (think plane and car) and out and about (think beach or park). Here are some tips for eating healthy when you are out and about based on the Epicurious article with some of mine and others’ added in:
1. Plan ahead for outings. Bring food with you and save the concessions for a treat. If you are heading to the beach or park, pack a cooler full of refreshing, nutritious food. Try:
- Easy-eating fruit. Think small and sturdy: Cherries, bananas, grapes, ut-up melon or pineapple. Avoid any fruit that will get squashed.
- Food on sticks. The less you touch it, the less sandy it’s going to get. Plus, putting it on a stick makes more fun. Spear tomatoes, cucumber, and cheese for a light skewer.
- Wrapped wraps. A foil-covered wrap means that you can peel as you go—minimizing sandy-handed sandwich misery. Recipe to try: Smoked Turkey Wraps with Mango and Curried Mayonnaise
- Eat plenty of protein. Try all natural, energy bars with a balance of protein, carbs and fat. Or make up some all natural trail mix.
2. When on the move, in the park or on a hike, go for nutrient-dense snacks. Try:
- Hail to the kale. Kale chips are salty and addictive, and even the most strident green-hater can be persuaded to try them. No time to make your own? Try Finds’ fave Brad’s Raw Foods.
- Spice it up. Roasted chickpeas are crunchy like nuts and packed with protein—but with only a fraction of the fat.
