I first saw Bearded Brothers bars on a trip to Austin, TX a few years ago. They looked awesome – simple ingredients and packed with nutrients. I tried samples from Yumvelope. Then I got in touch with them, got samples and hosted a review + giveaway. Recently, I was introduced to new flavors and sampled all of them again at the Allergen Free Cooking Session at Now We’re Cooking. When I was getting links for my recap, I noticed that Bearded Brothers now make savory bars called BOLD. I wrote to Bearded Brothers and they sent me some to try and some to giveaway!
At the tasting, we tried all six flavors of Bearded Brothers original style bars and compared notes. As a reminder, Bearded Brothers bars are “handmade with love and joy in Austin Texas” The bars are 100% organic, mostly raw, gluten and soy free, vegan friendly and “amazingly delicious.” The bars are compact and dense and are packed with nutrients.
At the tasting, we all had different favorites. My previous favorite is the Fabulous Ginger Peach, but the new Outrageous Orange Kale may have knocked it out of the lead. Many of the questions were on packaging and we had some good chats about the branding and packaging and what appeals to us about Bearded Brothers. I love the quality and variety of flavors of the bars as well as the cool vibe and community mindedness of Bearded Brothers. These are great go-to travel snacks because of their nutrition profile and portability.
When I went back to get the links and info, I saw the new Bold line. Bearded Brothers Bold bars are savory and come in three flavors: The Greek, Coconut Curry and Texas BBQ. Many people are looking for savory energy bars to cut down on sugar and to fit a different taste profile. Bold bars are tasty, organic, vegan, gluten and soy free and contain no GMOs. Each bar is loaded with essential nutrients to power your workouts and adventures. These bars are also low in carbs relative to other energy bars and have very low sugar. Each bar has about 15 grams of fat, 8 grams of protein, only 5 grams of sugar and around 220 calories. You can see the pieces of nuts and seeds, so you know what you’re eating. These bars are pretty small but are filling. I ate them on the road while traveling and found them satisfying. I did not reach for something else to eat as I sometimes do with sweeter bars.
I tried all three flavors:
- Texas BBQ: These bars are a slightly sweet, salty, and smoky. It is not a super strong flavor. I think the smoky is the most pronounced. I liked that it was mild and savory. I was surprised at how much I liked it as I am not a huge BBQ flavor fan.
- The Greek: The Greek bar tastes of rosemary and oregano. The oregano is a pizza sort of flavor to me. This was my least favorite of the three, but I would eat it again if I had one handy.
- Coconut Curry: You can really taste the curry in this bar but it is not overpowering. The turmeric has tons of nutritional benefits. This is by far my favorite of the three. I can see having this one on hand often.
