If you have been around here before, you know that I love healthy, nutritious foods and snacks and companies that do good. Meet FLYJOY. In 2011, FLYJOY founder Curtis Bomgaars started buying quinoa directly from a non-profit indigenous Ecuadorian women’s foundation in South America and selling it in the US. In 2013, he started working on nutritious snack bar recipes in his kitchen to try to reach a broader audience with the quinoa. After a ton of work, he came up with the delicious recipe that is now FLYJOY.
Not only are FLYJOY bars healthy and delicious, but a portion of the profit from each bar goes directly to HOPE International. HOPE International is a nonprofit that provides business training, a safe place to save and microloans to the world’s poorest families. They say, “so each time you eat a FLYJOY and receive a healthy boost of energy, you also provide a helpful boost to others in need around the world!” I say – awesome!
FLYJOY is made with crunchy quinoa, chia seeds, ground flax, nut butter and oats. Every bar is gluten free, Kosher, non-GMO, vegan and all have under 200 calories each. They come in 6 flavors:
- Espresso Cacao Nib – A bar for “serious coffee lovers!” Me, me! It has finely ground espresso, chunks of real cacao and whole almonds in a base of creamy almond butter, ground flax, chia seeds and crunchy quinoa. This bar is rich and delicious with an extra kick from the espresso. Great for breakfast on the go for coffee addicts like me.
- Coconut Almond – Big chunks of almond and fresh coconut are mixed with creamy almond butter, ground flax, chia seeds and crunchy quinoa to create this bar. I love that it is sweet, but not too sweet, and coconutty but subtle.
- Peanut Cacao Nib – Peanuts, crunchy cacao nibs and a hint of sea salt are added to almond and organic peanut butters, ground flax, chia seeds and crunchy quinoa. Peanut butter, chunks of peanuts and cacao – what could be bad?
- Cherry Coconut – Like Coconut Almond but with tart dried cherries added in. YUM!
- Cranberry Almond – Like Coconut Almond but with tart dried cranberries added instead of coconut. I have to admit cranberries are not my fave, but these bars are still tasty.
- Blueberry Almond – Like Coconut Almond but with blueberries added instead of coconut. I love blueberries and they make this a super-healthy snack or breakfast on the go.
My faves are Espresso Cacoa Nib and Coconut Almond, but I love all of the flavors to stash in my travel bag. Want to try them all so that you can pick your own fave? You can get a starter kit with 2 of each for $19.99. Plus, Flyjoy will send one lucky reader a box of 12 of the flavor of his or her choice.
