When I saw my naturopath last summer, blood tests showed that I could use some more B-12. I went and got shots for a while but fell off the wagon. I was about to buy some B-12 lozenges when I ran into a guy in Whole Foods repping Kind Organics Organic B-12 Spray (now rebranded to mykind Organics). I tried it and loved it! I wrote to Garden of Life who owns mykind (and who I have worked with before) and they sent me some more B-12 spray, Vegan D3 Spray and multivitamins for men and women plus some awesome swag.
mykind Organics B-12 Spray is a whole food methylcobalamin in a convenient, delicious raspberry spray. Vitamin B-12 (cobalamin) is a water soluble B vitamin that is essential for energy, metabolism, formation of healthy blood cells and DNA synthesis. Methylcobalamin is the natural form of B-12 (equivalent to the B-12 in your body). The spray is vegan, gluten free, non-GMO Project certified and it contains no synthetic binders or fillers.
The spray is convenient and it tastes good. It is a quick and easy way to get accessible, organic, all natural vitamins. In a recent blood test, my B-12 has improved. Yay!
Since I received this package, I got a blood test and it turned out my Vitamin D is super low. You can get Vitamin D from many foods and from direct sunlight (which is tough for us Midwestern folks in winter.) I also don’t eat dairy most of the time. Two strikes. Why supplement? They say, “certainly those who are vegan or vegetarian would not be getting enough D3 in their diet and would want to consider supplementation, along with those in northern climates who don’t spend as much time outdoors in the sun. Regardless of whether you fall into one of these categories or not, chances are you may not be getting adequate amounts of vitamin D.”
I asked Finds’ friend nutritionist, Lauren Antonucci, her opinion on Vitamin D supplementation. She said that it is a complicated and controversial topic. As many as 50% of Americans may have low Vitamin D including many people with chronic illness. Research is not clear on whether increasing the levels of Vitamin D in people with chronic illness will help to correct the disease. More research is needed. She said, “That said, there are many good reasons for many to supplement with Vitamin D for people with osteoporosis, those with low levels who have pre-diabetes or diabetes, or menopausal women. Everyone would benefit from including more foods rich in Vitamin D and from 10 min of daily sun exposure as able to allow our bodies to produce Vitamin D on its own as it should. Best food sources Include salmon, sardines, egg yolk and fortified milk.”
I have been using the spray and adding in some of the foods Lauren recommended since I got the results. The vanilla flavored D3 spray is made from real food, is vegan, gluten free, non-GMO Project certified and it contains no synthetic binders or fillers. The certified vegan Vitamin D3 comes from lichen and it also contains organic plant omegas (from organic pumpkin seed oil and organic cranberry seed oil). One spray contains 250% of the daily value of Vitamin D. It is convenient and also tastes pretty good. I figure it is worth a try!
They also sent me multivitamins for men and women and an awesome tote bag and re-usable water mug. The supplements are made only from real food – over 30 fruits, vegetables and herbs. They are free of synthetic binders and fillers.
