I came across an awesome post about road tripping from Lindsay at Your Fit Trip. Lindsay is a road warrior, so check out her awesome blog for the best in airport food, healthy dining, on the road exercise and much more!
Here are the three apps Lindsay tried on a July 4th weekend roadtrip with her feedback:
RoadAhead Highway Exit Finder – Free
Lindsay says, “RoadAhead displays upcoming exits and the merchants that are located off the exit. You can pick your highway from a dropdown or have the app automatically locate you. Once you’re located, the app displays a list, organized by exit, with the nearest exits displayed first. Underneath each exit is a list of merchants including ATMs, auto repair, coffee, dining, gas, grocery, lodging, medical , parks, shopping, tourist info and pet services. You can select which categories show up on the exit list. The results can also be shown in map view.”
2. Where To? – $2.99
Lindsay says, “Where To finds the nearest merchants in the area you are driving through. Whether on a highway or driving through a town, Where To displays a map with pins based on your selected category. From the ‘wheel of fortune’ you can choose from food & drink, entertainment, travel needs, medical, academic institutions, shopping, grocery, repairs, attractions and organizations. Each category is then further refined by subcategories. You can select your food choice by region or by type (think vegan, vegetarian, breakfast, kosher, organic and sandwiches to name a few).
Where To also has what they call “augmented reality” for an additional charge. Best described with a picture (scroll down). This is what I think of when I think of Google glasses. Pretty cool.”
Lindsay says, “Despite my Roy Rogers comment there is a time and a place for a rest area and this is where this app comes in. The app detects your location and displays nearby rest areas on a map. Clicking on the rest area icon gives you a list of amenities. The map also displays scenic views and welcome centers.”
Check out Lindsay’s post for her list of helpful pros and cons for these apps.
