I tried some Chia Moxie peanut butter and loved it. I quickly looked up the company and sent an email to them. I really wanted to try the Chia Charger energy bites and I had never seen them before. In a strange twist of fate, I was with a friend at the New York Athletic Club’s pre-NYC marathon dinner and happened to be seated with Catherine Walsh. Catherine is one of the founders of Yummari, Inc (formerly NY Super Foods), the company that makes Chia Moxie and Chia Chargers. It was a lucky coincidence for me!
Catherine has celiac disease and she and her husband, Jason, are both endurance athletes. They started making Chia Chargers in their kitchen “incubator” after reading about the superfood properties of chia seeds. They say, “our introduction to the chia seed prompted us to tinker with ingredients in our kitchen for several months and, after may experiments with different recipes, we created the first ever raw chia health energy bite: the Chia Charger.” They are also good corporate citizens. Yummari is a certified B Corp and a member of 1% for the Planet.
Chia Chargers are GMO free, gluten free and vegan. Chia Chargers are also raw and have a 6 month shelf life. They come in wrapped 1 oz bites. Each bite contains 450 mg of Omega-3s, too! They are available in Cranberry, Coffee and Chocolate Chip (new). These bite sizes pieces are “the perfect size for stowing in a pocket” during a run and they are super easy to digest. Several testers with sensitive digestion have used them for running fuel with no issues. The Chocolate Chip Chargers are my personal favorite. Stacy was spot on when she said, “they are super tasty and taste like a treat, but loaded with superfood nutrition.” Good and good for you – a win-win! The Coffee has a nice mild taste and even our friend, Brian, who does not drink coffee liked the taste. The Cranberry are also tasty. The only drawback with Chia Chargers is that you can get some chia in your teeth, so be sure to check a mirror (or run with a trusted friend!)
Chia Moxie was the first Yummari product I tried and you know I love peanut butter! The peanut butters are vegan, soy and dairy free and contain no salt and no added hydrogenated oils. They use Fair Trade Coffee / Fair Trade Organic Chocolate and Celtic Sea Salt. I tried the Chocolate and it was really tasty. The chia seeds are not as noticeable as in the Chia Chargers, but there is a nice crunch because of them. I loved the taste and texture of this peanut butter. I enjoyed it with apples, on sweet potatoes and on rice cakes/toast. I love the extra nutritional boost. The Coffee flavor is mild and it tasted very similar to the Classic flavor to me. I liked them all but the Chocolate is my favorite – no surprise!
