You may remember when I wrote about 
Ideaction Corps (Finds’ Fave Kelly O’Brien’s company) being mentioned in a Wall Street Journal article on B Corps. Kelly shared some great holiday offers from some B Corps that I listed here over the holidays. I then checked out a bunch of companies on the B Corps list and contacted some that I was interested in.
Given the severity of this winter, I was especially excited when Scott from Icebox Knitting offered to send me a few pieces from their line for review.
Icebox Knitting has two main lines: Xob Upcycled and Dohm – Knit in America. Made in Longmont, Colorado, they’ve made Dohm wool hats on antique, hand powered knitting machines since 1994. Their hats and accessories are made from world class yarns and are produced with the strictest environmental standards. To further their commitment to the environment, they created Xob (say zob) an upcycled collection in 2006 . Xob products are made almost entirely from post consumer recyclables. Pieces and parts of recycled wool blend sweaters and suit jackets are used to create fun hats and accessories. In addition, wool scraps are re-purposed into wool wiping cloths and trimming from fleece are used a filling for dog beds in an animal shelter. By sourcing “previously loved” sweaters, buying mill-end fabrics, and sending production remnants to be re-used, Icebox Knitting has diverted over sixty thousand pounds of waste from landfills. Material diverted from the wastestream to date: 68,945 pounds! That is 34.5 TONS, people!
By scoring in the top 10% of all B Corps for environmental impact, Icebox Knitting is honored as one of the “Best of the Best for Environmental Impact.” Icebox Knitting is also one of the first North American manufacturers to be certified as a B Corp that manufactures 100% in the US.
They have a ton of cute hats and mittens for children, women and men in both lines. In the Xob line, they also have a bunch of fun accessories including scarves, bags and awesome stuffed monkeys. Another great feature, the hats and gloved are lined with warm, cozy fleece so no itching from wool! And they are really warm, too. Take that polar vortex!
