Want to be kinder? Now there’s an app for that. Sometimes it seems like all there is on the internet and TV is bad news. Mahala sent me a link to the Huff Post article “Introducing Kindr, the iPhone App That Will Make You a Better Person.” Up my alley? Hell, yes!
I downloaded it immediately! You can sign in via email or Facebook. You can then send compliments to your contacts (they are clever), read good news from the internet and even compete to be the kindest of your friends. Bar the last one, I am totally excited to spread the love with compliments and read some good news! They are launching in conjunction with National Bullying Prevention Month and ask people to take the Kindr pledge:
Take the Kindr Pledge
We believe that a simple compliment can make a big difference – and millions of them can change the world.
In honor of National Bullying Prevention Month, we’re launching the Kindr Pledge. We believe that kindness is one of the most powerful ways to combat bullying, and that if we all commit to being Kindr, we can get rid of bullying entirely. But that’s a big goal, and we know we can’t do it alone. It takes a commitment from each and every one of us, even if it’s just a little bit every day, to use our words and actions to lift up our friends, coworkers, family, and neighbors – and then to encourage them to do the same. Doing so creates a virtuous cycle of kindness that can help all of us live happier, more meaningful lives.

I think this is awesome! I for one need something to combat all of the negativity I see all over the ‘net and news. How about you?
I have been asked the question “why do you run?” many times. I have sometimes answered “because I can.” Maybe “because I am able” is a better answer. Tim Boyle started the not for profit group IRun4 after a friend commented on his Facebook page. He posted a picture for inspiration for his first 5K run and one of his Facebook friends commented “you can run for me anytime!” His friend was unable to run due to an upcoming surgery. His friend healed and was able to run again in the Special Olympics. His friend, Michael, has Down Syndrome. He is now in a wheelchair and can no longer run. However, Michael has been inspiring Tim for several months with his artwork which he sells on Facebook auctions and donates 100% of the proceeds to charity. Last year he raised $2500! So Tim runs “for Michael.”
Tim also matches other runners with other special needs children and adults. The runners dedicate their runs and races to their match participant. They can post pictures of their events, signs, t-s, etc. to a Facebook page. The group has 6,711 members. Make that 6,712. I joined to add some additional meaning to my running. Let’s call that Random Act #4 for October 4th, 2013.
How cool is this? It doesn’t cost anything and can really make someone feel so special and included. I look forward to adding one more reason to love my run! (Thanks to Jenn at Runs With Pugs for posting about this great organization!)
