Get a Lift, Help Someone & More

I recently posted a discussion of the Charles Duhigg book The Power of Habit by Don. I love the idea of anything that can help us create good habits and kill the bad ones. I saw this review of the app Lift on Dot Complicated‘s newsletter this morning. Lift  can be used as an iPhone app or on the web.

lift app

One main purpose of Lift is to help you form (or break) habits and meet goals. It has a simple design and user interface. You enter a the list of habits you want to form/stop. At the end of the day, you check off the ones you successfully completed/avoided. The app resets at midnight and keeps track of how many days per week or month you successfully achieve your goal. Don’t know what to target? There is a list of common habits/goals to choose from.

Lift “helps you achieve your goals big or small” in three steps:

  • Set Goals – Browse the most popular habits or create your own.
  • See Your Progress – They’ll give you a personalized report that tells you how you’re doing.
  • Get Support – Friends keep you accountable and cheer you on.

There is a sharing component where you can “get support”. I have friends who share their myFitPal food diaries for this accountability and Daily Mile for running for cheers. I have too much sharing going on in my life. Liz Wassman from Dot Complicated suggested that “for [her], the satisfaction of checking off the habit every day was enough motivation to stick with it. It’s amazing that such a small action successfully works as motivation, but it does.”

Lift is available for iOS or online (free). What do you think? Would an app like this work for you?

From PostSecret.com 9/7 post

Not to be too heavy here, but this week is National Suicide Prevention week and PostSecret is running its 15th fundraiser. Normally scandalous or mysterious, the post from September 7th has a postcard from a man on Father’s Day who indicated it would be his last as he was destroyed when his wife left him. His kids saw it and knew right away that it was him. They went to him and intervened and he sent a follow up card indicating that “time and family helped him heal his wounds and allowed [him] to  see that there was more of life to live.

PostSecret is doing a fundraiser to provide support for volunteer suicide hotlines and resources. The International Suicide Prevention Wiki is an open source worldwide directory of suicide prevention hotlines, online chat, text-lines and resources. This wiki was created and is maintained by the PostSecret community volunteers.

The “PostSecret” on the left is an important reminder to all of us that small acts of kindness do make a difference. So keep at it!
