I love sweets, but have been trying to stay away from eating sweets with no nutritional benefit. Read: most of them. That said, I think that the occasional treat is a must – especially for active folks like me. As you know, I LOVE to find new things and share when I find something unique and delicious. Add in a special twist – like an all natural cookie with some nutritional benefits – and I am bursting. Enter The Cookie Department!
I got a cookie from The Cookie Department in my May Love with Food box. It was the Great Full “sweet potato wellness cookie”. Hello – sweet potato and wellness in one cookie? Yes, please. I emailed and they generously sent me one of each cookie to try and are offering to send my winner some cookies, too! Lucky person!
What is The Cookie Department? They are a team of bakers that use all natural ingredients and no artificial flavors (and no trans fats) to bring you “delicious and functional” cookies. Functional cookies? Each cookie has ingredients with a specific nutritional function. These cookies are large and each is marked two servings. They are really large enough for two servings and are great to share as an afternoon treat or post lunch or dinner.
- The Awaken Baked (espresso cookie) has the caffeine equivalent of one cup of coffee. A sweet pick me up!
- The Chocolate Chip Nookie (vitality cookie) has Maca – a superfood which is believed to boost vitality.
- The Great Full (sweet potato wellness cookie) contains sweet potatoes and cranberries which are both good sources of antioxidants.
- The Tough Cookie (peanut butter protein cookie) with 10 grams of whey protein – keeps you full!
- The Snap Back (ginger detox cookie) includes ginger, cayenne and blackstrap molasses for natural detox.
OK, that sounds good, but how did they taste? In a word? Great! I shared the Snap Back with Sapna, the Awaken Baked and Great Full with Molly and Stacy and the Chocolate Chip Nookie with Molly, Sarah and Rhys. I ate the Tough Cookie myself!
The Verdict:
- My favorite BY FAR was the Snap Back. To be fair, I love all things ginger – especially cookies. The cookie was delicious, fresh and big enough to share. It has a great zesty ginger flavor and a bit of sugar on top for added sweetness. We even had some left over for Sapna’s afternoon snack! I loved the fresh, tangy taste.
- I expected to love the Great Full and found I liked it, but since we tasted it with the Awaken Baked, it did not have as much taste or zing as I expected. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it, but not as much as the Snap Back or Awaken Baked.
- I really liked the Awaken Baked but I needed some coffee with it! (We ate it on a plane after a half marathon.) The cookie is very rich, chocolaty and satisfying. I think this is a close second for me to the Snap Back and the other girls agreed! If you like coffee and chocolate, this is the cookie for you!
- The Tough Cookie was delicious, too. Not too sweet and very filling. The Tough Cookie is a must for peanut butter fans. It probably had the most staying power of any of the cookies and would work as an afternoon snack – half would do the trick!
- The only one that I would be unlikely to get again is the Chocolate Chip Nookie. I am not much of a chocolate chip cookie fan to begin with. The other gals agreed that it was “OK for a ‘health cookie’”, but not something that they would likely go for first. All in all, I really enjoyed these and the fact that they are all natural and have some nutritional value as opposed to the average cookie.
