Friday Five: 5 Ways to Have Happier Holidays

It’s Friday, so I’m linking up with Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness for the new Friday Five 2.0.  Their theme this week is “Holiday Races.” I skipped my usual Thanksgiving race this year and the Rudolph Ramble was canceled due to weather, so I’ve got nothing! The Husband and I are visiting family and friends for the holidays so I’ve been thinking about ways to be happier and more engaged.

5 Ways to Be Happier For The Holidays

1. Disconnect and Reconnect. I’m guilty of being attached to my phone and computer. This season, I’m trying to disconnect when I am with friends and family to reconnect. We were explaining life before the internet to our nephew. Now I know how my aunt and parents felt when they explained life before TVs in every room – old!

2. Stay Active. Make time to work out, walk or run wherever you are. Get bonus points for spending time with a friend or family member while you’re at it. I always enjoy a morning run here and use the time to decompress and enjoy the warm(er) temps.

3. Listen. Ask an older family member or friend to tell stories from his/her life. Ask about family traditions. Try to learn something new about each person you interact with. Want to save the memories for future generations? Consider using the StoryCorps app. It’s free!

4. Give Freely (and with No Expectations). Give gifts to those in need or give your time by volunteering.  Need some ideas? Buy some gift cards for food/a supermarket and give them a person in need. You can still support Toys for Tots via Toys R Us or your local drop off site. When buying gifts for those you exchange with, enjoy the giving and try not to worry about what you get in return.

5. Give Yourself and Others a Break. Some of us try to get the perfect gift, make the perfect meal, throw the perfect party – you get the picture. We also have expectations that our family and friends should behave in a certain way. I say, give yourself and others a break this season. My goal is to do the best I can, enjoy our family and friends and set expectations aside.
