Jerky is all the rage at the moment. I sampled a ton at Expo West and the NCA Sweets and Snacks Show. I missed the opportunity to meet Matt Tolnick from Lawless Jerky at Sweets and Snacks, but was lucky enough to connect with him afterwards. I love meeting company founders – especially ones who have left the daily grind to follow their dreams. Matt Tolnick made jerky during college and law school because he loved it and because it was expensive to buy it. His recipes made him happy and his friends loved it, too. He finished law school and practiced law for several years, but he “realized that he could bring more smiles to more faces through his jerky than through his lawyering.” And, Lawless Jerky was born.
Lawless Jerky is handcrafted and American made. Matt still creates all of the flavors himself – there are seven so far. There are six beef jerky flavors: Japanese Curry, Aloha Teriyaki, Sweet Sriracha, Honey Chipotle, Mango Habanero and Pho. There is now a pork jerky that is a take on the BBQ spare rib, too! It is still made in small batches by hand. The flavors are inspired by cuisines from around the world and contain “secret marinades.” All of the beef flavors use 100% grass fed beef and contain no preservatives, artificial flavors, corn syrup or MSG. I tried Mango Habanero, Honey Chipotle and Aloha Teriyaki. The texture is firm and the jerky is very filling. You can see the spices and real food ingredients like sesame seeds in the Aloha Teriyaki (see above). The Mango Habanero has a nice spicy kick. Each package has a hot pepper barometer of 1 – 4 peppers so show how spicy each flavor is. Aloha Teriyaki is a one pepper. Honey Chipotle is two peppers. The Mango Habanero is four – or very spicy. I would agree with that assessment! The three flavors I tried are all natural and gluten free. I liked them all, but Mango Habanero is my favorite! I like the kick.
