Friday Five: 5 Healthy Food Tips for 2016!

It’s Friday, so I am linking up with Courtney at Eat, Pray, Run DC, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What and Mar at Mar on the Run for their weekly linkup. Each week they pick a theme and bloggers join in and link up. This year instead of specific themes, they are letting us be creative with broad themes for each week of the month. This is the first “Food/Drink” themed week. I have been away all week at a work meeting, so please forgive me for “borrowing” some great content from Finds’ Fave natural food chef Amanda Skrip’s recent newsletter. She had “10 tips for your healthiest new year,” so after the food related five, I will give you a link to the full list. Plus, I will tell you where to find Amanda online and in Chicago!

Amanda’s 5 Healthy Food Tips for 2016:

  1.  [I took creative license here and combined two drinking related ones for the start and end of day] Start the day with a cup of lemon water.  Lately, [she’s] been adding a teaspoon of chlorella powder for an extra boost of detoxifying greens. Have a cup of herbal tea after dinner to calm the nervous system, signal your done eating, and ward off late night snacking.
  2. Rethink your breakfast, making sure you’re getting a good dose of protein.   This will keep blood sugar levels stable, rev up metabolism, and keep you full until lunch.  Eggs, hemp seeds, nut butter, and greek yogurt are all good options. Need a new option?  Try a chia bowl.
  3. Add an extra serving of leafy greens to your day.  Have a side salad you’re your meal, or toss them into a smoothie, sandwich, wrap, pizza, soup….  Anything goes!  Try baby arugula, kale, spinach, or chard.
  4. Pick up a new vegetable at the market and experiment in your kitchen.  Keep things fresh and fun.  [She loves] celery root, parsnips, broccoli rabe, or collard greens. [I do, too!!]
  5.  Add a few probiotic rich foods into your diet.  Think raw sauerkraut, kimchi, or coconut kefir.  A good quality supplement can also work to boost your good gut bacteria which can have a positive effect on immunity, digestion, and energy.

Like I said, Amanda’s blog has 10 simple ways to get your new year on track – of course you can use these any time! If you are lucky enough to be in Chicago, you can take one of Amanda’s classes or have her come into your home (or group) to teach you healthy cooking and wellness tips (or to be your personally healthy chef for a day!) You can also sign up for her newsletter or follow her on Twitter and Facebook.

I promise to get back to original content next week! In the mean time, please don’t miss any of my great giveaways. Those are 100% original.

Have a great weekend!
