Friday Finds: Road Trip Helpers + Great Memorial Day Deals!

It’s Memorial Day weekend and I saw that gas prices are the best that they have been on this weekend in ages. What does that mean for this summer? ROAD TRIP!

Last summer, I came across an awesome post about road tripping from Lindsay at Your Fit Trip. Lindsay is a road warrior, so check out her awesome blog for the best in airport food, healthy dining, on the road exercise and much more! She has not been posting much this year but her airport guide is a gem for health conscious travelers.

Here are two of the apps Lindsay tried last summer on a weekend roadtrip with her feedback:

roadahed appRoadAhead Highway Exit Finder – Free

Lindsay says, “RoadAhead displays upcoming exits and the merchants that are located off the exit. You can pick your highway from a dropdown or have the app automatically locate you. Once you’re located, the app displays a list, organized by exit, with the nearest exits displayed first. Underneath each exit is a list of merchants including ATMs, auto repair, coffee, dining, gas, grocery, lodging, medical , parks, shopping, tourist info and pet services. You can select which categories show up on the exit list. The results can also be shown in map view.” [It might make sense to try iExit which seems to be a new version of the same app! Free for iOS]

Where-To-with-shadow_400x4002. Where To? – $2.99

Lindsay says, “Where To finds the nearest merchants in the area you are driving through. Whether on a highway or driving through a town, Where To displays a map with pins based on your selected category. From the ‘wheel of fortune’ you can choose from food & drink, entertainment, travel needs, medical, academic institutions, shopping, grocery, repairs, attractions and organizations. Each category is then further refined by subcategories. You can select your food choice by region or by type (think vegan, vegetarian, breakfast, kosher, organic and sandwiches to name a few).

Where To also has what they call “augmented reality” for an additional charge.

I came across a few more to add to the list:

ra-logo1_400x400Roadside America – They say, “never miss another giant twine ball, crazy museum or hilarious statue.” The experts at RoadsideAmerica.com reveal a world of nutty sights and wonders along the highway. App purchase ($2.99) unlocks one of 7 “oddity-rich” US or Canada regions. Optional in-app purchases unlock all 10,000+ attractions, or individual regions. The Husband and I went to the Cadillac Ranch in Abilene, TX once on a road trip. (Tip: The website is free so you can always pull it up on an iPad using the web.)

JoD5bESQ_400x400Yelp – I love Yelp to find places to eat, any kind of store, coffee, gas and anything else. Plus, it has reviews, pictures, links to maps and ability to contact. You can also check out menus and browse nearby places. I am a Yelper at home and on the road.

What else? I am also a big fan of Google Maps, Open Table (for reservations), Hotel Tonight (for last minute hotel reservations) and Strava (for measuring my runs on the road).

How about you? What are your road trip must have apps and websites?
