Friday Finds: Take a Moment, De-Bug (or Not) + More

momentNeed help managing your smart phone addiction habit? Netted says, “Guess what? Ironic as it is, there’s an app for that. The iPhone app Moment (in beta for Android) will break your phone addiction.”

Moment is an iOS app that tracks how much you use your phone each day. You can set daily limits on yourself and be notified when you go over. You can also set up notifications if you are using the phone more than average. The app runs behind the scenes – you can “set it and forget it.” Moment tracks your usage and warns you if you are above your daily limit. Don’t worry, it doesn’t shut you down. It helps you to become aware of when you surpass the personally defined limits you set.

Moment’s goal is to “promote balance in your life.” They say, “Everyone has a different balance and Moment will help you find yours.”

Moment is currently available for iOS and in beta for Android phones. The app costs $4.99. It could be worth it to get that addiction under control. It is cheaper than therapy!

In the “there is an app for that?” category, I was excited when I saw an iPhone app that is supposed to deter mosquitos from coming near the phone’s holder/area.  There are a few apps that emit a sonic frequency that the bugs are supposed to avoid. For iOS, the Pico Brothers make “Anti Mosquito Sonic Repeller” and for Android, a whole page of apps!

Well, this seems like an awesome idea if it works. Kerry Sanders from the Today Show took one for the team. Looks like in an infestation situation, it definitely does not work.

The Gear Guy at Outside Magazine has even more bad news:

Sadly, the placebo effect is strong in this one. Several well-designed studies from the last few years show that these apps and other EMRs (electronic mosquito repellents) don’t lower the number of bites to human subjects who held the devices. And, it gets worse. Those initial findings aren’t totally correct. A more recent university study—”Electronic mosquito repellers induce increased biting rates….“—shows that the cell phone apps and other high-frequency noisemakers actually attract mosquitoes to you. Subjects had 33 percent more bites when using the ultrasonic devices.

You win some and you lose some. These are free, but, um, probably not worth trying. Have you tried these? What is your best mosquito repellent? I have some Mosquitno bands to check out.
