Tried It Tuesday: Chips & Snacks Your Nutritionist Will Approve! #Giveaway

I have been fortunate to try so many awesome, healthy snacks recently. Today, I am going to talk chips and popcorn – the good for you (but still delicious) varieties!

I raved about Good Health Natural Foods’ Glories Sea Salt Sweet Potato Chips in my April Bestowed Box reviewI wrote to them to tell them about the interest on my blog and they offered to send me their Half Naked Popcorns and new Popped Crisps for review and giveaway. They sent two huge boxes which I quickly shared with friends to get feedback. Oh, and of course,  I also tasted a bunch, too.

Before I tell you about those, I am going to tell you about this cool company! Good Health Natural Foods’ mission is to be a “snack industry innovator & leader, dedicated to making healthy snacking more accessible to individuals and families by emphasizing affordability, nutrition and great taste.” They “strive to empower customers to make healthier choices and live fuller, healthier lives.” They make natural foods by using only non-GMO ingredients, expeller pressed oils and NO artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. They strive to deliver “novel, flavorful and affordable” products in a responsible and sustainable way. Pretty awesome!

They sent me all of these to try!!

On to the popcorn and crisps! The “skinny”:

  • I brought some Half Naked Popcorn to a movie preview with some of my running friends. We gobbled it up. The popcorn is all natural, non-GMO, contains no trans-fats, gluten, dairy or soy and is 70% lower fat than many other bagged popcorns. The entire (huge) bag is 4 servings (4 cups per serving at 120 calories per serving) and 5 of us did not even polish it off. It is delicious, filling and not greasy!
  • I am a bit embarrassed to tell you that I did not share the Wild Blue Buffalo Half Naked Popcorn. I think I may have given the husband a few kernels. This flavor is AMAZING. It is so tasty and addictive and only 33 calories per cup. It is also all natural, non-GMO, contains no transfats, gluten, dairy or soy. I will say that when I get more, I will not share it! 😉 (But I will part with one bag for the giveaway as that is only fair.)
  • All of the Popped Crisps are all natural with no artificial colors or preservatives, contain no-GMOs, trans-fat or cholesterol and are baked not fried. The Cheddar, Sour Cream and Onion and Zesty Ranch flavors contains dairy. The Multigrain contains gluten. The reviews are in and my friends really like them!
    • Finds’ friend, Liz said, “My friend Theresa and I would say we’re serious addicts to Smart Food White Cheddar popcorn, kettle corn and all other varieties of popcorn snacks. The healthy popped chips we sampled in Zesty Ranch and Sour Cream and Onion had great crunch to them and just enough salty flavor. Plus, splitting an entire bag didn’t undo our workouts since it was less than 250 calories per person! I’m definitely interested in trying the kettle corn and the white cheddar flavors, too!
    • Maureen and Cliff tried the corn crisps on a road trip. She said, “We really enjoyed the [White Cheddar Corn Popped Crisps]. They were a great snack while we were on the road. They had a nice crunch and a delicious cheesy flavor. I’ve had other chips in the past that were similar, but very “airy” in texture. These were more dense and I was surprised at how filling they were, which I appreciated.
    • Emily said, “I ate the Kettle Corn ones. They were light and crispy with enough sweetness/salt to satisfy this fairly snobby chip connoisseur. The serving size was generous for a portion, but who can stop at one serving? I enjoyed them plain and also enjoyed dipping them in hummus. Don’t ask. They get 5 stars in my book.
    • Jen said her chip loving husband ate the BBQ Potato Popped Crisps with absolutely no complaints of “too healthy.” A win!
    • The husband and I like the crunch and dense texture of the Original Potato Popped Crisps, too! And they are nicely seasoned. Not too salty!

As I said, the nice folks at Good Health Natural Foods sent me extras! I will send one winner a box with large bags of Half Naked Popcorn, Wild Blue Buffalo Half Naked Popcorn, Zesty Ranch Multigrain Popped Crisps, BBQ Potato Popped Crisps, Sour Cream and Onion Potato Popped Crisps and White Cheddar Popped Corn Crisps. I saw JicaChips on Laura’s Heat it Up Bloghop giveaway. I love jicama so much that former colleagues used to make jokes about my containers full of the stuff on our consulting projects back in the day. Jicama is high in fiber, low on the glycemic index and is high in Vitamin C and Potassium with 40% fewer calories than potatoes.

Melissa from Orto Foods, the company that makes JicaChips says,I started Orto Foods in May 2013. My husband dubbed me a ‘snackuum’ for my ability to inhale large quantities of chips in one sitting. I got sick of eating greasy, high calorie chips (with a side of guilt) but I couldn’t find any healthy chips that really satisfied my cravings. That was when I across jicama. The jicama chips we made didn’t last long at my house so we tried selling them at a local farmer’s market and they were a hit.” Snackuum – that’s a good one – no?

JicaChips come in four flavors: Sea Salt (Laura’s fave), Smoked BBQ, Spicy Szechuan (tie for my fave) and Cinnamon Sugar (tie for my fave). Each bag is less than 100 calories (and it is not small) and the nutrition info has been updated to 6 grams of fiber and only 8 grams of sugar per bag. The chips are crisp, light and tasty. I found the Spicy Szechuan to be the most flavorful and the Cinnamon Sugar to hit the mark for a light, sweet snack. I am not a huge BBQ fan, but I still gobbled these and the Sea Salt flavor right up. These chips are a healthy addiction! The only downside of these chips is that they are a bit pricy – $19.96 for 4 bags ($4.99/each).
