Friday Finds: 2 Free Ways to Jump Start Your Zen + More!

In the beginning of the year, my brother emailed me to tell me to check out the website Headspace. He said he was loving the quick start meditation program. I checked it out in the early days of my blog so I resurrected and added to the post. I saw that Headspace has been updated recently, so here is another update in case meditation is on your list of health habits to start this year, too.

The Headspace promise!

Here is the original post from August 2012:

As I have mentioned several times in the past few months, one of the things I really want to do for me (and my health) is to learn to meditate and practice it! Maureen sent me a great website to learn more.

Headspace (“The world’s first ‘gym membership for the mind’”) is a subscription service with over 270 hours of available instruction for meditation. There are daily lessons and programs, as well as additional content and a great blog. These can be viewed on a PC or via a mobile app. The “Take 10” program is free so you can see if this works for you. The site has great graphics (and Andy “the Jamie Oliver of meditation” has a cool British accent!) and is easy to use.

At Maureen’s suggestion, I signed up for Take 10 and will let you know how it goes. The intro and 1st lesson were less than 20 minutes in total and I really enjoyed them. The program pricing is pretty reasonable – Maureen and I were discussing that sometimes paying for something makes us use it. (I also really liked Andy’s blog post this week on holding a grudge. I may have a little crush on Andy – sorry Neal ;))

What do you think? Do you subscribe to any online paid services? If so, do you use them more than free sites?

If you are interested in meditation, check out Take 10 at Headspace and let me know what you think!

In January, I mentioned that there is now a free app for Headspace. You can now download sessions to your smart phone or tablet to use them anywhere and anytime.

You can watch the video to learn more about what is new about Headspace in their recent release and to see if it is right for you!

Have you checked out Headspace or similar programs? What do you think?

Speaking of meditation, I received an email from the Mentor’s Channel and they are offering a free 21 day course –  Osho: A Course in Meditation.

They say, “You deserve to live in a state where stress is replaced by gratitude, resentment, replaced by love and mindfulness is as natural as breathing.” Nice.

I have never heard of Osho, but they say he has “a global reach for the past several decades and millions of friends all over the world are very familiar with his teachings.” He has over 650 books in India that are available in 60 languages that are transcripts of his thousands of talks. The Mentor Channel is synthesizing these talks into one program and they are offering it for FREE. This is one of the first times to hear Osho’s teachings in the US. Each daily session is about 15 minutes long in which you will listen to Osho and a facilitator to guide you through the daily meditation.

The purpose of this course is to teach you how to “make every moment a meditation” and to help students to become more mindful. This program starts Monday, July 21. Here’s the link to register.

WAT-AHH BottlesHey Chicago friends, check out a cool, free event this weekend sponsored by Wat-Aah! (Be careful the link has sound!) From July 19-20, WAT-AAH!, one of the fastest-growing bottled water brands geared to kids and teens, will open a weekend-long free art exhibition at Moonlight Studios (1446 W. Kinzie St.). Launched as a way to encourage everyone to drink more water this summer, the exhibit is an extension of the ongoing WAT-AAH! Taking Back the Streets traveling art campaign.

Since 2008, WAT-AAH!’s mission has been to make water “cool and desirable” among kids and teens. With its iconic logo design, a boy screaming “Drink WAT-AAH!,” the brand has successfully competed against sodas and sugary drinks for kids’ attention. It is leading them to embrace a healthier and more active lifestyle. They even said that Michelle Obama collects the exclusive bottles!

Check it out! And take some pics if you do and send them over, please!
