(My) First On the Go Snack Reviews (+Giveaways) of 2014!

As I have said before, eating healthy on the go can be a big challenge. It is so easy to grab whatever is around. I find this is especially true for airplane flights/airports and long work meetings. And now, since I eliminated gluten and dairy (for the most part) healthy snacks can be even tougher to find on the go.

on the go fiI was fortunate to try some awesome new (to me) on the go snacks recently. Even better, I have some giveaways so you can enter to win some, too! I tried a few Zing Nutrition Bars from Abe’s Market and then wrote them. I saw Bakery on Main‘s Truebars on Breathe Deeply and Smile and then grabbed one at Whole Foods to try – and quickly wrote them, too. Lastly, I saw NOURI Bars on Twitter and loved their mission and contacted them. These are all winners! I can’t wait to tell you about them!

Zing Nutrition Bars were created by nutritionists for their patients and their children. They wanted to “keep it simple” for their patients to get “complete nutrition.” They offer seven vegan options and three that have whey protein. Four are coated in organic dark chocolate, four are soft “chocolate chip cookie dough” flavors and two are fruit and nut butter flavors. For all their differences, they all have “a virtually identical balance of complete nutrition.” Check out the profiles here:

These bars are 100% natural and mostly organic, gluten and soy free, high in protein and high fiber, non GMO or transfats and are “AmaZINGly delicious. I tried the vegan flavors: Chocolate Coconut, Coconut Cashew Crisp, Cranberry Cashew Crisp (actually I did not try this one! Oops! I gave it to a friend – she liked it – see below), Chocolate Peanut Butter, Dark Chocolate HazelnutDark Chocolate Sunflower Mint and Double Nut Brownie

The bars are compact and fairly dense. I liked the “cookie dough” texture and the chocolate coated bars. Some of my friends who tasted them thought that the texture was like an original Power Bar. You may know that is not an issue for me. I love old Power Bars. Maybe it is the nostalgia factor? I did have a surprising favorite. I brought the Sunflower Chocolate Mint with me on a trip. Normally, I prefer other nuts/nut butters and am hit or miss on mint. This bar is delicious! I liked all of the flavors and really liked that they were not too sweet. As I mentioned, I gave the Cranberry Cashew away to a friend. She said, “the Zing Cranberry bar was my favorite of the 3 kinds [you gave me]. It tasted good and had a really “good value” for the calorie content. I liked that it only had 200 calories and still had 10g protein.”

I really like these bars, but don’t take my word for it! Zing Bars sent me 6 of the bars I tried for one lucky reader.  You can also follow Zing Bars on Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook to keep up with specials and promotions. They also have 15% off on all orders from the Zing Bar website through 2/14 – no code needed. Please use the Rafflecopter at the bottom of the post to enter.

Truebars are a product from Bakery on Main, a small-batch, gluten-free bakery that started due to the need for healthy, gluten-free options.  Truebars are delicious and have a good sense of humor, too. Their slogan is “I’ve got NOTHING to hide!”

Love the pens and stickers, too! These bars have nothing to hide!

Truebars are made low-GI ingredients and have fiber and Omega 3 from chia seeds.  They are non-GMO, dairy and casein fee, low sodium, certified gluten-free, Kosher Parve and contain no transfats or cholesterol.

I like these for the taste, the fact that they are gluten free and it doesn’t hurt that all flavors are less than 200 calories. They are a great part of breakfast, pre-run or as a snack.  I liked that I could identify the foods in the bar. Real food is good! Truebar has 6 unique and delicious flavors: Apricot Almond ChaiCoconut CashewFruit & NutHazelnut Chocolate CherryRaspberry Chocolate Almond and Walnut Cappuccino.

I love these bars! It was hard to pick a favorite, but if you twist my arm, I would pick Walnut Cappuchino or Hazelnut Chocolate Cherry. I love the chunks of the main ingredients and interesting spices and accent flavors. I shared these with several friends, too. One friend said, “Yum!  Though the consistency reminds me a bit of the Original Power Bars (not her fave), the flavor was great and ingredient list was simple. I would definitely buy these again. ” Another said, “Thank you for the Truebar… it was delicious and I ate it right up! Loved it and will definitely buy those when I see them!” All good!

You can keep up with Truebar on Facebook and TwitterBakery on Main has offered one lucky reader a sleeve of bars (one flavor) of the winner’s choice. (12 bars- $25 value). Please use the Rafflecopter below to enter.

OK last but not least, meet NOURI BarsAs I mentioned, I saw them on Twitter and was intrigued. NOURI bars are made with “the best quality” ingredients and 100% real fruit and nuts. Each bar is “lovingly handcrafted” with organic, gluten-free and vegan ingredients. And my favorite part, fot every NOURI bar you buy, NOURI provides a meal for a child in need. They are “creating a movement of social good through healthful snacks that give back:  one for one.”

nouriNOURI bars come in three flavors:

  • Creamy Cashew: Creamy cashew bar with organic chocolate chips and hints of vanilla.
  • Wild Cherry: Wild cherries and crunchy peanut butter blended together with organic cashews.
  • Apple Spice:  A delicious blend of apples and cinnamon.

NOURI bars are gluten free, 100% vegan, and made with organic ingredients. These bars are mostly dried fruit and nuts and you can identify the pieces of fruit, nuts (and chocolate!) I tried the Peanut Butter Wild Cherry and was impressed with the fact that it weighed in at less than 200 calories. It was very flavorful. I shared the other two with my friends the day before the Houston Marathon. We all expected to like Apple Cinnamon the best (and Dave did). Diane and I thought that the Creamy Cashew was more filling and the flavor was mild yet delicious. We both thought that one would be a satisfying afternoon/pre-run snack. That was my favorite.

You can keep up with NOURI bars on Twitter or Facebook. Check out their website to buy bars and see where they are sold.
