Friday Finds: Awesome Free Movies, Car Free Week & More!

snagfilms logoI like to watch movies – especially documentaries. I was pretty psyched when Time Out Chicago sent me an invite to the free movie sharing site Snagfilms. Snagfilms is “a free video streaming website with the soul of an old time cinema house. They recently relaunched their online platform with a new look and feel.

You have to love a site with a manifesto. It is:

SNAGFILMS MANIFESTO:

  • We believe you should have free access to a carefully selected library of high-quality entertainment.
  • We believe the best recommendations come from trusted sources: friends, experts, and most importantly, you.
  • We believe it should be easy to discover, watch and recommend great movies.
  • We believe that great movies and motivated fans can change the world.

Although this site is new to me, it has been around since 2008. SnagFilms, an “ad-supported social video-viewing platform.” offers viewers carefully selected video content and the chance to discover, watch and recommend high-quality content from its extensive online library. What you will find is smaller, indie movies, not blockbusters that you will see on other sites.

Here is what I saw under health and fitness documentaries
Here is what I saw under health and fitness documentaries

There are tons of movies including more than 800 documentaries and over 150 that are in the health and wellness category alone. It’s Erica heaven! The site enables you to create a movie queue, make lists (“collections”), get recommendations, follow others and be followed by others. Content is available online and via many other apps and devices.

I can’t wait to check out some of this content! How about you? Blockbuster or Indie? What are your favorite movies?

If you know me, you know I do not enjoy driving and much prefer public transit. Great news for me (and you if you are like me and are in Chicago) – September 22 – 28 is Car Free Week in Chicago. Drive Less Live More is a web-based program designed to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality by shifting local travelers from drive-alone car trips to healthier, active, and greener travel modes: these include transit, cycling, walking, carpool, vanpool, water-taxi and telecommuting. car free week

Drive Less Live More is more rewarding. Don’t sit in traffic – get started today, you could win big! Some of the prizes listed are:

  1. A Civia Loring bicycle from Roscoe Village Bikes
  2. A Chicago “Stay-cation,” including a Museum of Science and Industry passes, a night for two at the historic Blackstone Renaissance Hotel on Michigan Avenue, and a $100 Bistrot Zinc gift card
  3. ZipCar & Divvy memberships, and much more!

It seems easy, too. Users sign up and create a profile. Then, they self-report trips via an interactive Trip Tracking Calendar. Transit, cycling, walking, carpool, vanpool, car-sharing, and telecommuting trips are awarded a point score: each one-way trip using at least one of these travel modes receives a score of .5 points. Points are used to enter drawings for prizes. Employers can get in the action, too!

What is your preferred commuting method?
