Plus Size for Kids? Links I Like for Getting Back to Work and Some Deals

I LOVE days off and I LOVE watching the Today Show. Labor Day morning while I did my treadmill speed workout, I enjoyed it for a good, long while. A highlight for me was a story on wearing summer pieces in your fall wardrobe (I also learned that turtle necks are in…YAY! I may be a dork, but I love turtlenecks!)

There was a story that got me thinking: “Is it problematic to label larger girls clothing as ‘plus sized’“? I remember when I was a kid, JC Penney had “husky” sized for boys. (They probably still do?) I know it was a tease-worthy thing then. I think more children are overweight now and the people in the story seemed happy that they could buy their larger-sized girls fashionable clothes in the same department as their friends. I can see that. The more I thought about it, the sadder I felt. Children are bigger now for many reasons: nutrition and parental eating habits, some from following in the footsteps of sedentary family members and some for medical reasons. It just made me feel sad and I could not help thinking of a simpler time where we spent all summer running free in our neighborhood working off all of the food we could possibly eat (and worse all of the life long concerns of children who are put on diets/given food rules or just starting with poor eating habits). What do you think? Better for a child’s self esteem to have choices? just depressing? inevitable? who cares?

I am not going to lie… I am kind of sad to have to work after the long weekend. So here are some links I like for improving energy and posture to help me (and you) through the week:

From The Greatist 28 Ways to Boost Energy Instantly. I am IN for chocolate, going outside, drinking coffee and eating regularly (not necessarily in that order!)

The Greatist also has a pretty amusing set of “deskercises” you can try at work. I dare you!

I like Samantha Gardner’s Six Simple Tips for Good Posture (and really need to follow them more!) The Greatist has a great posture at work info graphic, too!

Some Back to Work Deals! It seemed like everything under the sun was on sale this weekend… some things still are:

Need to spruce up your home or work space? Check out two cool deals at Living Social – $18 for wall art from Fresh Words Market or $20 for $40 at Wall Words. Pretty cool.

A very smart colleague freed me from the stigma of being a subscriber to trash magazines like US Weekly by calling it “well rounding”. Want to join me? Living Social has $34 for a one year subscription to US Weekly – that is way way less than the news stand price!

Daily Candy Deals still has $75 for $150 at Bluefly.com – a deal site for the “fashion obsessed”. Bluefly has some of the top brands at bargain prices. They are having some great sales now, too! They also have great Chicago deals and a bunch for custom ipad and iphone cases ($14 for Pix Wrap iphone case – very cute idea for a gift!) HERE.

Williams Sonoma has some great deals on Cuisinart products including this awesome looking grill/press. It looks like it would kick George Foreman’s (grill’s) butt!

Snapfish has 50% off photo books, blankets, mugs and more! Use code WOW50 through September 12 (excludes 11″ x 14″ lay-flat books and SocialPics photo books.)

I posted this Gilt City deal on Friday and Lisa F. commented that she loves this site for holiday cards and stationary. It’s a great deal and still available…Gilt City has 50% off on Minted.Com What is Minted? Minted is a global community of independent graphic designers and an online store that prints and sells the best of their designs in the form of paper goods. They have great personalized items for back to school and cool holiday card designs if you are ready to get a jump on the holidays! (Not on Gilt City’s email list, use this link to register and get 20% off your first purchase.)

That’s all for now. I hope you had a great long weekend filled with friends and fun like mine and have a great week ahead!
